When Should You Cleanse Crystals & How Often?

When Should You Cleanse Crystals & How Often?

When should you cleanse crystals and how often should you cleanse your crystals? It’s a good question, so let’s jump straight into it!

I get asked this a lot and it is a bit of a complex question as there are so many points of view. Everyone develops their own ways with crystals plus some of us can sense energy more than others.

Why Do We Need To Cleanse Crystals?

Crystals pick up all kinds of energies from our thoughts, feelings, other people and places. Sometimes these energies are not in alignment with the crystal’s higher purpose or our intention. This energy may even be negative or can simply clog the crystal, weakening its properties.
Energetically cleansing them clears away anything that should not be there and brings the crystal back into perfect balance and working at an optimal level. My beginner’s guide to cleansing crystals can be found Here.

“See your crystals like a channel of energy, we want that channel to be clear!”

When Should You Cleanse Crystals?

The following is a guide only and based on my experience with crystals over two decades, what I sense from them, plus dowsing their energy. Many people develop their own cleansing routine over time and with experience.

I cleanse my crystals and crystal jewellery often and it has always worked for me. I see many people run into problems when they rarely cleanse their crystals or don’t cleanse at all. Here are nine reasons to cleanse your crystals and crystal jewellery:

1. When You Get New Crystals

I recommend you always cleanse new crystals that you bought, found or were given as soon as possible. Certainly, do not use them before this initial cleanse.

2. If You Have Not Cleansed Them Before

If you have not done this for whatever reason, don’t worry. Start today, better late than never!

3. After Wearing or Carrying Them Throughout The Day

This is the most common way to work with crystals and crystal jewellery on a daily basis. I cleanse mine at the end of the day.

4. After Using Them In A Crystal Healing Treatment

This includes placing crystals on parts of your body, doing a crystal healing layout (aka body crystal grid), visualising or meditating with crystals.

5. After Placing Them On Or In Your Chakras

You may be working with a set of crystals for Chakra Balancing or just working on one chakra with a single crystal.

6. If Someone Else Touches Or Handles Them

Energy is transferred easily this way but there may be nothing to worry about. Better to cleanse them just in case.

7. Before & After Using Them In A Crystal Grid

If you follow my steps for crystal grid creation on my blog or in my books you will know this already.

8. Once A Month For Display Crystals

Crystal grids, crystals on display or left out in your home pick up energies over time. A monthly space clearing routine is the easiest way to do this.

9. If You Feel The Crystal Needs Cleansing

Never ignore your ability to sense energy. If you feel it needs cleansing sooner than normal, then cleanse it.

Hi Priya, hopefully, I have already answered this in the blog post above. I recommend you cleanse crystal jewellery just like crystals after using/wearing them during the day. How you cleanse is up to you but waiting for the Full Moon can be a long time. I’ve already covered cleansing methods and my take on charging crystals elsewhere. Please visit the Resources page for more info.

There are many different cleansing herbs, woods and resins and you can use them to cleanse crystals. Good ones are Sandalwood, Frankinsense, Sage, Copal, Lemongrass, Camphor or any cleansing blend. If using incense sticks or cones you will have to be sure they are natural and not just made with fragrance oils.

    Hello Ethan,
I have done level 2 Reiki. If I want to cleanse my grid with Rreiki, how long should I hold the hand over it?
    Love and light.

    Hi Ethan.
I have a question concerning the cleaning of Shungite.
I have read that you should recharge it in the sun periodically to clean but living in Canada we can have 10 days or more in a row without sun, especially in winter. Is there another method that would be as effective.?
    Thank you.
