Moldavite Meaning

The Cosmic Origins Of Moldavite
To really understand the energy of Moldavite, we need to go back to the beginning of the story and look at how it was created. Around 14.7 million years ago a huge meteorite struck the Earth in what is now Germany. This formed the Ries Crater.
The impact was so powerful the surface of the meteorite and the surrounding rock and sand of the impact zone is estimated to have reached temperatures many times hotter than the surface of the Sun.
What happened next blows my mind! This rock and soil from the impact was vapourised and flung into the Earth’s atmosphere. The tiny droplets of liquid rock then began to join together into this molten green glass.
Then they rained down back onto the Earth. This material was scattered between 250 – 400 kilometres away, landing in what is now the Czech Republic. Lots of it was found near the Moldau River, which is where Moldavite gets its name.
What Moldavite Is & Isn’t
As you can see the story of Moldavite’s creation is pretty dramatic and complex which has led to some understandable confusion. Moldavite is not a meteorite and didn’t come from Outerspace looking like the green stone you see today.
Moldavite is a Tektite: A glassy material created from the meteor impact. But Moldavite did travel through the sky afterwards and landed very far away.
Many pieces probably contain particles from the meteorite. So, it’s like a fusion of earthly and extraterrestrial matter. Moldavite is also unique because it’s the only transparent green Tektite.
Moldavite’s Lost History
Despite its recent popularity, Moldavite has been known to humans for tens of thousands of years. Not many people know this but pieces of Moldavite were found at an excavation in Austria with the statue of the Venus of Willendorf.
This is the oldest statue of a Goddess ever found (see below). And it’s estimated to be between 25 and 30 thousand years old. This shows that these people must have seen Moldavites as divine and sacred objects.

Moldavites may have been used as tools, like Obsidian. Historically, they have been used as amulets or talismans and jewellery.
Moldavite began to grow in popularity for its metaphysical properties in the 80s. In 1988 the crystal healing author Robert Simmons published a book about it called Moldavite: Starborn Stone of Transformation.
I don’t think he gets enough credit for this. Though, many people first heard about Moldavite through his later book, The Book Of Stones (affiliate link*), published in the 2000s.
He’s since written another very good more up-to-date book on Moldavite called The Book Of Moldavite (affiliate link*) which I recommend. If you can’t find this in your local crystal shop, see my link where you can get it online.
Moldavite Meaning & Spiritual Benefits
Before I get into the most common side effects, let’s look at the spiritual benefits and energy. This is just my perspective based on my experiences since my first Moldavite, around 15 years ago. This includes information given to me by Moldavite when meditating with it that I have never shared before…
Moldavite’s Energy
Moldavite is a high-vibration crystal. It has a very intense otherworldly energy. To me, it’s a combination of air, fire and spirit elements. It works with all your chakras, including the higher chakras above your head. It’s a powerful activator and cleanser of the crown chakra, third eye and heart chakra.

Moldavite’s Cleansing Properties
Moldavite is a deeply cleansing crystal that can cleanse your entire chakra system at the same time or focus on a single chakra. It’s very detoxifying, clearing out energetic blockages and helping you release karmic blocks. It has the ability to go straight to the source or root of an energy blockage.
If you look at Moldavite, it’s covered in scars created in a past cataclysmic event. Through its purging effect, it can sometimes bring up old emotional wounds that need healing. This can be uncomfortable for some people.
Moldavite’s Spiritual & Practical Benefits
It raises your vibration, expands your consciousness and activates the lightbody. More practically, Moldavite can support you in embracing your individuality. It also helps you see the bigger picture or a higher perspective.
It has a galactic vibration almost like a cosmic portal. You might resonate with Moldavite if you’re a Starseed or anyone who works with extraterrestrial beings or energy. This stone can help starseeds remember their soul’s mission here.
Moldavite’s Psychic Powers
Moldavite is well known for accelerating your spiritual growth or even triggering a spiritual awakening. This can lead to multidimensional experiences such as increased clairvoyance, lucid dreaming and astral travel. It stimulates symbolic dreams.
Moldavite: The Stone of Transformation
If you think about how Moldavite came to be created you can see why it has become known as a stone of transformation. Moldavite supports you in overcoming inner or outer obstacles. It can move things that are not serving your highest good out of the way. More on this in a minute.
Moldavite does not like stagnation and can break you out of a holding pattern. It’s a catalyst that can align you with your life purpose by shifting you onto a higher timeline if needed.
I found Moldavite to be connected to the Green Man and the Egyptian God Osiris, who are both associated with resurrection and rebirth. Green is often a colour of growth and new life. This crystal also links like a stargate to the Orion constellation.
I think the reason Moldavite might have been associated with a mother goddess by some ancient people is that she represents rebirth and the creation of new life.
3 Myths About Moldavite
Before I get into the common side effects of Moldavite I just want to bust a few myths.
MYTH 1: “Moldavite isn’t a gemstone”
I think the confusion comes from it being a tektite and not having a crystal structure. This does not mean it can’t be used as a gemstone. Gemstones have never been limited to what mineralogy classifies as “crystals”.
Moldavite is listed in the Gemstones Of The World (affiliate link*) book which is used by gemologists and jewellery makers around the world.
MYTH 2: “All cut and polished Moldavite is fake”
Moldavite has been cut into faceted gems and polished stones. But it is very hard to tell the real stuff from fakes when it does not have the raw surface texture. It’s a much riskier purchase, for sure.
MYTH 3: “Moldavite is the only extraterrestrial gemstone”
We’ve already touched on this topic. Moldavite wasn’t formed outside of this planet. There are crystals that come from outer space though. Like the Gibeon Meteorite or the Pallasite Meteorite that contains whole Olivine or Peridot crystals (don’t tell anyone I told you about those or the price could go up too).
6 Side Effects of Moldavite
There’s no denying Moldavite is one of the most powerful crystals. Over the years many people have shared their Moldavite experiences with me. There are some common side effects and occasional bad experiences I think you need to be aware of before trying Moldavite.
I’ve graded them from mild to more intense. Just remember that not everyone experiences these. You might have one or none.
1. Heat Sensation
Lots of people feel heat in the palms of their hands when they hold Moldavite, even if they are not someone who normally feels the energy of crystals. You might feel this in one of your chakras. This is probably the purifying fire energy starting to activate.
2. Pulsating Energy
This may occur along with the heat sensation. It’s like an energy pulse when you touch it. If you’re sensitive, you might feel waves of energy passing through your aura. You might be picking up on the memory of the impact that created it or the energy radiating from it.
3. Dizzyness
I experienced this myself when I first got close to Moldavite. It’s the most common effect people report. The reason this happens is that it’s so high vibration it can unground you. Also, the rush of high-impact cleansing energy can knock you off your feet. In most cases, this will not last long and may never happen again.
4. Feeling Sick
Some people just feel unwell from Moldavite. You might get a headache or just feel a bit ‘off’. In the rarest cases, people have been physically sick.
This could be a sign that it’s not compatible with your energy or too strong for you. But it could also be a physical response to the detoxification process. It’s like a purge. I even had one person tell me they got an outbreak of acne, which they hadn’t had since they were a teenager.
5. Emotional Wounds Resurfacing
Moldavite can sometimes bring up old emotional wounds, trauma and unhealed parts of yourself. In most cases this can be understood, worked through and released.
But this isn’t an easy thing and you might not feel ready for this. Some of the fear I’ve seen about Moldavite I think stems from people not understanding this and then saying the crystal has “dark energy” when they are just facing their own fears and shadows…
6. Life Disruption
This side effect can be experienced as things in your life can break down and fall away. People may leave your life, a relationship could come to an end and you might lose your job. All challenging things to go through but with hindsight, they usually happen for a reason that is not always clear at the time.
What If You Don’t Feel Anything?
If you don’t feel anything, or get any of the side effects it could just mean that you have done a lot of healing work already. Your chakras are clear. Also, it’s a sign you are exactly where you need to be in your life at this time.

Thank you Nathan, another great article ! 30 odd years ago I visited the History Museum in London specifically to see a large emerald cut Moldavite. I was not disappointed.
I feel attracted to Moldavite but have hesitation hearing the experiences of people.
I had the same hesitancy with Moldavite, but when I took the plunge it was a truly lovely experience.
My advice for whatever it’s worth, would be to approach Moldavite (or indeed any crystal, whether new or familiar) with respect, love and an open mind and heart.
