How To Cleanse Crystals Without Sage or Any Tools!

Learn how to cleanse crystals without sage, smoke, water, moonlight, sound or any tools. No special healing experience or qualifications needed. This method is discreet and completely free too…

I occasionally hear from readers of my blog who are looking for alternative ways to cleanse their crystals. My two most recent books cover many more methods and all of my books have the technique I am going to share with you here.

Why You Might Need Another Way To Cleanse Crystals

There are pros and cons to ALL cleansing methods and different ones will suit some people more than others. This is one of the reasons I will not give you only one or two cleansing methods.

Also, if you are travelling many methods are not very practical. The other reason you might be looking for alternatives is that you just don’t have the money to buy tools or supplies right now. Water and Sunlight can damage certain minerals so what about other methods?

The Problem With Sage & Smoke Methods

I hear from people all the time who do not like to use Sage, Palo Santo or any form of Cleansing Incense. Smoke can irritate peoples lungs and should be avoided if you are asthmatic, have any lung disease or breathing difficulties.

The smell can be pretty intense and some people do not like the lingering smoky smell in their homes (you can always do it outside). Perhaps for privacy reasons you do not want anyone you live with to smell the smoke? Then there are rented accommodations with overly sensitive smoke alarms. Pets kept indoors do not like smoke.

Most incense, smudges and aromatic woods are pretty smoky

The Problem With Singing Bowls & Sound Methods

This is another group of methods that commonly use tools like Singing Bowls, Ting Sha or Bells. These methods can be more expensive than buying a Smudge Stick but are more of a longterm investment. The main problem I hear from people with sacred sound is privacy.

Perhaps you do not want other people you live with to know what you’re doing? Others are worried that the noise can be heard by their neighbours, something I have never tested. Some pets get quite scared by high pitched sounds too.

Reiki & Energy Healing Methods

If you have learned Reiki or any Healing Modality you will already know how to use this to cleanse your crystals. It does not require any tools, smoke, sounds or supplies but classes and attunements are not free. If you are in a hurry to cleanse your crystals or do not want to learn these systems then this might not be right for you.

How To Cleanse Crystals Without Sage, Tools or Qualifications

You can still cleanse crystals without smoke, sound or any tools. This was actually one of the first methods I learned back in the 90s, along with using water. I am afraid I do not remember which book I learned this from. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it so I think it was one that I no longer have. Anyway, I have adapted and developed this method over the years.

Universal White Light

This method works by channelling Universal White Light through the chakras. You are also using your intention to direct energy which is your birthright. It’s similar to the concept of Chi/Prana but you are not using your own energy. This energy comes from the Cosmos and Universe and is limitless.

Maybe you’re wondering if this method works why you would use any other methods? Well, working with physical tools or herbs gives people something more tangible to work with. This is an energy healing method that uses visualisation. There are many ways to cleanse and many different traditions to choose from.

How To Cleanse Crystals With Universal White Light

This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to cleanse crystals that can be done by anyone, anywhere and costs nothing. Enjoy!

1 – Sit down with your legs crossed if you can or use a chair. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.

2 – Hold your crystal or crystals in your hands. One hand over the other if possible or cupped.

3 – Now visualise a beam of pure white light coming down from above into your Crown Chakra (at the top of your head) down to the Heart Chakra (the centre of your chest). Moving out along your arms and into your hands.

4 – See this Universal White Light in your mind’s eye filling the crystal or crystals and surrounding them.

5 – Focus on clearing them as you say out loud or in your head “I cleanse, purify and rebalance these crystals of all negative, unbalanced or fear-based energies, now!

6 – Wait a few moments or when you feel this has been done, open your eyes. You may need to take some time before you get up again.

I hope this is helpful to you. I would love to hear from you in the comments below (PLEASE keep any questions you have concise and stick to this blog post topic if you want a response).

    Hi Ethan
You didn’t mention your copper pyramid method. Where do you see the copper pyramid fitting in? Pros and cons.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I’ve covered Copper Pyramids in other blog posts. This is a method that does not use tools or costs money. Pyramids are still not that one of the more expensive tools for cleansing crystals.

  3. Caroline Robinson

Thank you Ethan. Following your previous posts, I have obtained a copper pyramid. However, I have found it difficult to accommodate awkward shapes or larger crystals. So this white light method is very appealing.
PS I wasn’t able to open the link to your Metro article. Please could you check it is operational?

Thanks for this Ethan! I can’t burn anything of the herbs in the house due to my husband’s health. Usually I will say a chant and a blessing while passing the crystal over the flame of a candle. I learned how to do this when I was heavily into Wicca, lived in a small apartment and was limited to things I could do. It is good to know there are other safe ways to cleanse. Love your site, btw. I am a new subscriber.

Thank you for your help on cleansing crystals Ethan. I have been concerned about the smell of sage. I blow on the crystals with intent or use the reiki symbol. I have been using white light but you’re way is better. Thanks for the tip.

    Hi Ethan,
I just did this crystal cleansing method for two of my crystals separately –
Firstly, a fluorrite pyramid followed by a chunk of black tourmaline.
It was weird because they both behaved very differently.

With the fluorite there was an immediate very strong wide strobe of white light pushing down through my crown chakra circling my heart and running out my arms to meet the crystal. Then there were lots of small sparkles and white light in a big ball. I could feel the crystal was happy, it felt loved and at the end it wanted me to hold it to my heart, which I did.
Then I did the black tourmaline practically straight after the fluorite but it was so different.
Slowly a thin metallic stream of liquid silver light, (which had small bubbles or little lumps in it?) ran down through my crown chakra into my body and creeping down my arms like liquid metal. Then there was a smaller ball of white light in my hands and I could feel a slight trembling between my hands. Next thing I know the black tourmaline is doing geometric dancing spirals backwards and forwards! I could see white spiral lines moving left and right like a slinky toy. It was like the crystal was really happy showing off and dancing in the light within my hands. I felt it wanted a kiss so I kissed it and I could feel love and joy from that crystal.

    Am I going crazy?
That’s what happened without me really trying or thinking about it.

Thank you for everything you do.
I always look forward to your emails.

    Take care
    Heather

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

That’s amazing Heather, thank you for sharing your experience. I guess all crystals work slightly differently and respond in different ways to the influx of energy. Fascinating!

    2. Cherry

No Heather, you’re not going crazy. You’re like me: well attuned to these two crystals. They may even be your soul crystals. Have you tried them in tandem? I have. Wowee!!

Crystals may have been forged in the dark, deep down in the body of the planet, but I’ve found that once brought to the light, they mostly can’t get enough of it. There are of course exceptions; my fave crystal shop has a 20+cm Green Apatite sphere for sale in the window (price £275, so as much as I’d love to I don’t think I’ be bringing it home); last Festive season I took a little astral trip there – it was only early December but, you know, lockdown) and in my astral form, where I can hear crystal harmonies perfectly, I could hear the strain as it tried to contain the overload of Sun energy. I intend to make a physical visit there as soon as it’s possible; I’m very Solar, so I might be able to help it drain off the excess, or at least alert the staff to the issue.

The difference in the behaviour of the light is probably down to the differing powers of the crystals. Fluorite is highly energetic and spiritual, so its happiness manifesting as white light and mini fireworks makes sense; whereas Black Tourmaline is much more grounding and protective, so it adds up that its manifestation of its happiness should be more metallic in nature, like the liquid metal that goes on to make a suit of armour. The difference could also partly be down to the shapes: pyramids focus energy, and raw Black Tourmaline is a heck of a conductor! By the way, thanks for the reminder: I’ve got four raw Black Tourmalines and a tetrahedral pendant of same which have taken some heavy hits of negativity on my behalf lately: I owe them a good cleanse!

It’s obvious that you love your crystals, and that’s just as it should be: there’s no question that they love you, and loving someone is a lot easier, human or crystal, if they love you back and show it. And it’s good to know that my crystals aren’t the only ones to request kisses. Some even ask for cuddle time!

      Love and Light.

This is helpful Ethan! Some of us used The Therapeutic Touch before Reike became popular…your post tells me that I could also use this to cleanse crystals. Thanks!

  8. Kelly

Hi Ethan; I confess I use water (only on my quartzes) but I’ve also been using the White Light method and didn’t even realize it. I’m totally blind so I picture and feel White Light as the warmth of the sunshine, and more often than not, it intuitively feels like it would be more gold in color if I could see it. I’m curious if I’m using it correctly, or if there is a better way to imagine White Light using my other senses? Thanks for any ideas.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hey Kelly, thanks for raising this with me. I wouldn’t worry about it as you can do this as having your clear intention and perhaps stating this while cleansing will allow the white light energy to flow. I hope that makes sense.

  9. Kelly

Awesome! I’m glad to get confirmation that my intentions work and that I won’t confuse the universe with how I visualize.

  10. Helen

I tried it with the white light and, because I had no practice in it, I did it three times, for safety.
Visualizing was a bit bumpy because I can’t do two things at the same time.
I have English as a foreign language and I messed with the clearing sentence several times and had to do it again until I could say it without interruption.
With the language no problem I understand everything, or I’ll check it out.
There are some words related to spirituality that work better at English because there is only one translation for different words in German.

I am not so good at visualizing, because I do not know whether I should see myself from the outside like with a camera or normally from the ego perspective. where I can hardly imagine light about myself.

When it comes to the camera perspective, I am not sure whether it is connected in such a way that I am the person I look at from the outside with the light and not an imaginary unknown person. That the crystals understand that I am the person.
Afterwards I made a mix of both first from outside so that the light comes in and then when it got to my arms I switched.
But in itself it worked quite well after a bumpy start. when I hold crystals in my hand, my connection to the crystals is slowly becoming stronger and I notice the energy a few minutes later, with this they will become stronger even more than usual and also feel a little different.

I think the next few times I can do it better

Works great thanks for the instructions. I got the Crystal Grid book for my birthday last year and it took a while that I had enough crystals for a grid, so I could only try it out so late.

    Kind regards
    Helen

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I wouldn’t worry too much about the words or the perspective. You can always change the words to suit you. Your intention is just as if not more important. I don’t personally see myself from a 3rd person perspective but if that works better for you then use it.

      1. Helen

Well from the ego perspective I can hardly observe my crown chakra when there is white light, that is on the top of my head with my eyes I see it badly ;-).

        Thanks for your reply
OK then I will not worry so much. Your page is very informative and well written 🙂
        Have a nice weekend
        Helen

  11. Murad

Hi Ethan. This might seem off topic, but I want to know what your opinion is about crystal water elixir and sprays.

Also is it ok to submerge crystals in water, without salt? I feel that salt is bad from an energy perspective and not a so efficient cleanser as some sources say. Thank you

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi, I have used crystal elixier sprays for clearing the aura or room. You need to know what you’re doing if you make them yourself as it can be dangerous with some minerals. Not something I teach, so I leave it to others. You can make them in an indirect way which is safe though. My perspective on water and crystals can be read here.

    2. Cherry

@Murad, to expose a crystal to any chemical – even water – is to run the risk of damaging it. That might be why you feel salt not to be a good idea. I don’t water cleanse at all, for two reasons: the risk of harming my crystalline friends, and the possibility of water pollution by one of their component substances (aluminium is the most abundant metal on Earth; it appears in the chemical makeup of many, many crystals – Sapphire/Ruby, Topaz, Tourmaline, Pyrite, the Feldspar group and numerous others – and it’s also a very bad thing to have in the water).

There is a safe way to make elixirs and sprays. I don’t find crystal elixirs any more effective than, say, a bottle of high quality spring water, so I don’t use them; crystal sprays tend to cause damp spots in my flat, so they’re off the menu too. But if you wish to do it, here’s a simple way that doesn’t need expensive equipment and won’t leave you with
a potentially toxic end product, no matter what crystal you want to employ.

      You need:

      • Water, obviously. Spring or mineral water is said to give better results but can be expensive, unless you live near to one and can just go and take some; tap water is perfectly fine and normally rather cheaper.

      • A container adequate for the required volume of elixir/spray. This should be clear, preferably glass, *absolutely* not plastic, and not filled to the brim; leave about 1cm of space between the brim and the top of the water.

      • A crystal of your choice: this should be of a size which will fit safely on top of your glass cover, so no 18″ tall Clear Quartzes even if you have one!

      • A piece of flat glass of sufficient surface area to cover the opening of your container, preferably with a bit of overlap.

      • Sunlight or Moonlight, depending on what crystal you’ve chosen and your own preferences. For example, if you choose to make a Moonstone elixir/spray, you won’t want to leave it in the Sunlight; but if you wanted to employ Heliodor, the Moon won’t be helpful as this is a very Solar stone. Clear Quartz is fine with either, so go with your own preference; Amethyst and Rose Quartz pair better with Moon energy.

      Method:
      1. Fill your container with your water.
      2. Place the glass cover over the top.
      3. Put your crystal of choice on top of the cover.
      4. Leave the whole assembly on a windowsill exposed to the celestial energy you need. If you’re using the Sun, you only need a few hours’ exposure (my crystals tell me not more than three); if you’re using the Moon, then you’ll need to leave it from Moonrise to Moonset, because the Moon is subtler and much less powerful than the Sun.
      5. Voila! One non-toxic crystal elixir/spray. Use as needed.

      Love and Light.

thank you so much for this. i am totally brand new to crystals and i have some very non-spiritual people in my life. i did a lot of research and ended up on your page, and purchased three crystals. i figured i’d start with the clear quartz as it seemed the hardest to mess up. i tried cleansing it twice. the first time wasn’t quite successful, because i was scared and had my doubts at first. then i tried it again and when i envisioned the light i could feel warmth at my head! then it felt like there was a buzzing/tingling on my skin near my ears. i continued and felt the warmth and electric feeling on my hands. i am so excited to continue my journey with this. thank you again

  13. Gennaro

    Hello Guys
I read about the Universal white light to cleanse crystals.
I have my doubts and my concern about something.
I am honestly not willing to use prana energy because someone s supposed to store in themselves
the Energy of the Universe first and then transmit it.
I know of people got plenty of time sick during something like that…
I know Reiki is different but I am not here for saying this.
However is it reliable that white light method(i mean without any kind of consequences)?
Or you clean the crystals but u take their negative energy?Or it may affect you?
    Thanx

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

You’re not storing the energy, it passes through you as directed. It’s not harmful in any way and does not have any side effects. If no prana/universal life force was able to flow through you then you would not be alive… Divine energy is not harmful or limited. Sounds like you might be confusing this with the Reiki teaching about not using your personal energy for healing. As explained above this is universal and infinite, not your energy.
