Discover your Hogwarts house crystals and gemstones. These are the gems and crystals that I feel support or represent the traits, strengths and personality types of the different Harry Potter houses…
The 20 Year Anniversary
I still can’t believe it’s been twenty years since the release of the first Harry Potter film (movie). Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released in 2001. I still remember that cinema experience and later read the book. I recently watched the 20th-anniversary reunion which was so nostalgic and a bit emotional. This blog post is a bit different and just a bit of fun, so do let me know what you think.
The Houses & The Sorting Hat
If you are not already aware, in the books there is a school for witches and wizards called Hogwarts where the main characters go. When students arrive, they take part in a sorting hat ceremony where they put on a magical talking hat. The hat decides which of the four houses (groups of live-in students) you belong to. Either Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.
Each house is associated with different personality traits and has its own colours and symbols. Because of the huge fan base, many readers were curious which house they would be placed in and tended to identify with one of them.
Finding Your Hogarts House
If you don’t already know which Hogwarts house you belong to, there are quite a few ways to find out. There are a lot of quizzes online and apps that will assign you a house based on your responses. The official one though is on the Wizarding World website (formally Pottermore) but you will need to sign up to use it.
Some people find it more accurate to see which house traits they most relate to. You can use the wizarding world site above or read the traits I share below for each house.
Hogwarts House Crystals & Gemstones
I’ve based my crystal recommendations on the traits I know of and those explained on the Wizarding World website. This article is for fun but also can help you tap into these strengths within you.
Since I wrote down my notes on these crystals I have found out that JK Rowling has given four cardinal gemstone associations for the four Hogwarts houses. Three of them matched mine (Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire). She associated diamond with Hufflepuff but it’s not a gemstone many can afford. There are also a lot of problems about the mining and ethics of diamonds these days. Because of this, it’s not used much in crystal healing.
The other precious gemstone colours fit the house colours. Colour is vibration after all so the meanings do align well too as I will explain. My crystal associations are based more on the properties and meanings of the stones, rather than the colours. I’ve given three crystals per house, I hope you enjoy them!
GRYFFINDOR
Symbol = Lion
Colours = Scarlet & gold
Traits = Brave, daring, courageous, determined, challenges authority
RUBY
This is an obvious gemstone association with the colour but also the meanings match. Natural Rubies range from purple to red, they are very active and firey stones. Gryffindors will find Ruby a great source for increased energy and vitality when needed. It also helps you tap into your personal power and leadership qualities.
TIGER’S EYE
This is one of the most Leo (the lion) energy stones there is. Golden Tiger’s Eye is a crystal of self-confidence and bravery. This golden-brown banded stone helps you face and overcome your fears. Tiger’s Eye also increases your willpower.
SUNSTONE
Sunstone always brings a sense of adventure with it. This crystal supports Gryffindors in shining their light and being seen. You can work with Sunstone when you need to adopt a more positive mindset to help you achieve your goals.
SLYTHERIN
Symbol = Snake
Colours = Emerald green & silver
Traits = Noble, ambitious, shrewd, resourceful, dark humour, pride in their appearance
EMERALD
As well as its colour association, this gemstone is good for all Slytherins. Emerald helps heal and open your heart which might soften your energy a little. It enhances emotional intelligence. Emerald is good for understanding esoteric knowledge too.
BLACK OBSIDIAN
Working with Black Obsidian supports shadow work. This black volcanic glass helps you sever connections to people or situations that are a bad influence on you. If you find negative people are drawn to you it offers powerful no-nonsense energetic protection.
SERPENTINE
Not only is this crystal green but it is also named after the serpent, the symbol of Slytherin. It is a great stone for Slytherins because it helps you access your power to change when needed. As well as supporting personal transformation Serpentine is cleansing to all your chakras.
RAVENCLAW
Symbol = Eagle
Colours = Blue & bronze
Traits = Intelligent, wise, witty, inventor, individual, skill in learning, overachiever
SAPPHIRE
Blue Sapphires not only display the house colour but they tap into the power of your mind. Sapphire stimulates mental processes and hones your skill of analysis. This blue to dark violet gemstone supports researching and looking at the details. It also teaches you to trust your inner wisdom.
SODALITE
This indigo to blue and white stone is perfect for Ravenclaws. Sodalite brings you mental clarity and strengthens the mind. It is an inspirational stone that activates innovative ideas within you. Work with this blue crystal if you are looking for clever solutions.
LAPIS LAZULI
I’ve chosen blue and gold Lapis Lazuli for Ravenclaws to help balance out their energy. Ravenclaws can get a little too stuck in their mind sometimes and put too much emphasis on intelligence and ‘facts’. Lapis Lazuli helps you tap into your intuition and spiritual wisdom.
HUFFLEPUFF
Symbol = Badger
Colours = Yellow & black
Traits = Trustworthy, loyal friend, hardworking, humble, ethical, fair, does their best
YELLOW JASPER
This warm yellow form of jasper assists you in maintaining a positive mindset. Yellow Jasper helps you stay grounded as you work toward achieving your goals. This earthy stone increases self-belief in all that you do.
BLUE KYANITE
This is a stone of truth and justice. Blue Kyanite teaches you to do what’s right in challenging situations. This silvery-blue crystal is also helpful in releasing self-limiting beliefs that may be holding you back from your highest potential.
TURQUOISE
Sky blue to blue-green Turquoise helps Hufflepuffs find their direction. It is a traditional stone of true friendship and supports you in expressing your truth. Turquoise brings clarity so that you can see what is the right thing to do and carries the energy of justice.

Ethan, I love this post. We are big HP fans in this house. We live in the U.S. and for Christmas my husband gave me a Slytherin edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (we only get Sorcerer’s stone here). I was very excited.
I love that you have taken the time to look at crystals and the houses. I was not exactly happy when I was sorted into Slytherin, but my daughter helped me to see it is my ambition and determination that put me there. Plus Merlin was a Slytherin.
This crystals you have chosen are great and very accurate for each house. I’ll be using some of this in my own meditations.
Great to hear, I am so glad that you enjoyed this. I think I heard they changed the name of the first book and film over there but forgot all about it.
Thank you Ethan!
Excellent post. It explained my love for my rubies, sapphires and tiger eye crystals.
I love my Crystal Kingdom.
Have a wonderful 2022 year
Gryffindor of course. I am a Leo and the Ruby is my birthstone. The Sun my planet. Very fun!
Wow! This was a fun interesting read! Thank you for sharing these picks with us! I personally loved all the choices. ? Although I will say as a hufflepuff I was surprised to see 2 blue crystals when all the other houses seemed to have colors coordinating with the house colors. Kyanite is a favorite of mine so I was happy to see it. However Turquoise was the biggest surprise for me as like diamond it can be expensive and furthermore hard to source the real thing. I like the choices but I was hoping for something like citrine or quartz to better represent the house and its colors like all the other houses.
Hi, you could use Citrine instead of yellow Jasper. There are few yellow stones that had properties that I felt were right for the house. Even Rowling’s own gem choice is not yellow. I’m definatly choosing the crystals by energy and meanings, sometimes colours match and sometimes they don’t.
I am a huge HP fan and I am so happy with this! I am a Hufflepuff both by choice and sorting hat ☺ and curiously the crystals here are so fitting for me and what I need for this year! Specially jasper! I only have red jasper though, and can’t seem to find yellow jasper in my country, would red work?
Thank you for the wonderful crystals and your 2022 reading, love it. (I also bought one of your book last year and I learned so much from it, thank you)
Thankyou Ethan
What a great informative post I’m Hufflepuff and proud of it I must get some yellow Jasper which I didn’t know much about I love reading your posts and have a few of your books already I’m learning more and more about crystals, tarot etc everyday so I need the books to refer to as I can’t remember everything I’m also an empath and use crystals and your books and advice to help me aswell
Thankyou so very much
Thank you so much. Well, red jasper is still grounding so it would be helpful. Have a look on Etsy, you might find the yellow variety there.
Please tell me an app to get to identify crystals & geo’s . Are geo’s used in healing? Please tell me how to cleanse crystals that I bought from a healer that were used on sick people.Thank you
Hi, I have never used apps to ID crystals. I recommend you get a few good illustrated crystal and gemstone books like the crystal bible by Judy Hall. Please visit the Free Resources page and go through the beginners guides at the top. I have several guides to cleansing that you should read.
Thank you so much for sharing this post Ethan. I am going to have to do the sorting that as both Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff appear to fit me. I also love the crystals you have chosen for both. Will let you know the final decision!
I was immediately drawn to Gryffindor however I was also attracted to Ravenclaw.! I think I would be placed in Gryffindor but have friends in Ravenclaw lol. My grandaughter loves HP as much as I do and we watch the movies together. They cross all generations. She got Hedwig for Christmas! and my husband made her a wand.
She casts spells on her little brother!! All good fun thanks for this 🙂
I have no idea which House I’d be in; I seem to have attributes which would let me fit into all of them.
Best crystals from the list: Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Kyanite, Obsidian.
I would also use Heliodor for Gryffindor because of its Solar connection. Gryffindor’s symbol, as Ethan has noted, is a lion, which is a very Solar animal, so I think it fits fairly well.
Love and Light.
Interestingly, if I recall the books correctly, the house points were counted in gemstones, which you’ve already mentioned for the respective houses: Rubies for Gryffindor, Sapphires for Ravenclaw and Emeralds for Slytherin. To the best of my recollection, which gemstone recorded Hufflepuff’s house points has never been mentioned; I would think Citrine, Yellow Sapphire or, more probably, Heliodor.
Its been a long time since I read them. Citrine is a good one for them too.
There’s also Golden Topaz, which as you know has the association with luxury and the nicer things in life.
(Took me long enough to think that one up!)
