Oracle Cards Vs Tarot
Recently, a meme I shared about Tarot Vs Oracle cards went a bit viral over on my Instagram. Sometimes people give oracle cards a bad wrap but the way they are different is what makes them appeal to me and many people. I don’t think it’s that fair to generalise oracle cards too much. Each deck is unique and has its own personality and purpose. It all depends on what oracle you use and what you’re looking for.
Why I Use Oracle Cards
I started using oracle card decks on a regular basis in the mid-2000s. They were an important tool for me to connect with my inner wisdom and trust my intuition. If you are on a spiritual path it can be lonely sometimes. These positive messages keep you going in the right direction. A good oracle can shine a light on an issue you may be avoiding or confirm something you were thinking about doing.
I pull a card every day, choosing the type of oracle that feels right at the time. I leave the card on my altar so I can be reminded of it throughout the day. Sometimes I need to gain clarity on something that I am unsure about. I will do a reading with three or more cards and journal it for reference. Occasionally I will work with oracle cards to help me in making a decision too.
Why The Artwork Isn’t Everything…
Over the last few years, oracle cards have become hugely popular. There are a lot of decks to choose from now and some really stunning artwork. Of course, the art style is important as it helps you connect to the deck and is a symbolic language. However, I do feel that some people put too much focus on this sometimes though.
I have bought beautifully illustrated decks that I was very drawn to but I just could not read with or were not accurate for me. With others, I did not love the artwork much but once I tried them I was amazed by their accuracy.
I would rather work with a deck that isn’t my ideal art style but is well thought out, accurate and helpful than one that looks beautiful but does not read well. Looks are not everything.
Go outside of your prefered art style from time to time. You might be surprised…
My Top X Best Oracle Card Decks
Over the years I have collected a lot of decks because I enjoy the artwork and like having different options. You can learn so much from an oracle as you connect to the energy of the cards. The oracles in this post are based on what I have at the time of writing. This was very hard to pick but I don’t want to give too many options here.
As some of you may know I have made my own homemade oracle card deck which I plan on getting published after I finish the next book. For now, these are what I consider to be some of the best oracle card decks I own and highly recommend. Please read my short reviews to get a better feel for what I feel the deck’s strengths are.

If you are looking for an oracle that has a narrative then this could be for you. The entire deck is set in an enchanted forest with animals, mythical creatures, people and fairies. Energy Oracle Cards by Sandra Anne Taylor
The energy oracle cards are a little different to my other recommendations. Although it is still an oracle for guidance it has a bit of a fortune-telling feel to it because it is predictive. The cards use photographic and illustrative elements mostly of people in different situations or holding symbols. There are also seven chakra/angel cards. Not all the cards are positive and the guidebook contains both upright and reversed meanings.
The cards work similarly to a psychic reading. They offer insights into what is going on around you and how things are most likely to manifest. The energy oracle may reveal information around a situation that you should know. It can bring up blocks or things you need to work on or heal within yourself. I find this oracle works best for spreads and more detailed readings. If you normally prefer Tarot you might like this oracle.

Archangel Oracle Cards by Diana Cooper
These are vibrant, colourful and diverse angel oracle cards. Each card features a different archangel or other important angels. It’s a high vibe deck with flowing pastel colours. All the cards have the name of the angel plus a message from them. Although this is still a spiritual deck I found the meanings to still be quite grounded.
This deck is a nice way to learn about and connect with the archangels. There are traditional and non-traditional angels in this deck. It is ideal for spiritual readings and guidance from the archangels you are working with at this time. It’s a really good one for daily angelic guidance and quite uplifting.

Messenger Oracle by Ravynne Phelan
This is the revised and updated version which is now borderless with 55 cards. The Messenger Oracle is very earth-based with elementals, dragons, tree people, shamans and magic users. The artwork is powerful with luminous lighting and saturated colours. The guidebook is short but gets straight to the point.
Anyone who is drawn to Celtic shamanism, Druidry, nature or animals should like this deck. It connects you to Gaia (Mother Earth), the forest, elementals and the magic of plants, trees and water. The cards have positive and empowering messages and teach you to trust your vibes. Works well as a quick daily message or for self-reflection and spiritual guidance readings.

OSHO ZEN TAROT (79-Card Deck and 192-Page Book).
To me the ultimate oracle deck is the “Osho Zen Tarot”. It is an oracle deck. It is only called a tarot is because it is organized into suits and major & minor arcana. And, like all oracle cards, can be used as single cards and as spreads.
But it is an oracle deck that reads your consciousness, from a high level zen perspective. I find it enlightening and transforming.
For each card, there is a page in the book written by Master Osho, and a page written by his disciple. They have a somewhat different style and level of understanding between them.
THE CRYSTAL ALLY CARDS (55-Card Deck and 296-Page Book).
Since you are interested in crystals, you might want to take a look at “The Crystal Ally Cards”. This is a very powerful deck from the consciousness of individual crystals and from the five elements – Earth, Fire, Water, Wind and Storm. The cards are grouped under the elements, and there is a card for each element and one for each crystal.
BLANK CARDS (which you can print or draw on).
I have blank cards, too, on which I print artwork and inspirational information that I come across, dynamically growing my own, personalized deck. I also plan to create a personal deck of the names and photos of each of my decks, to make it easier to decide which deck to consult at a given time.
THE ETHAN LAZZERINI CRYSTAL DECK (a work in progress).
Although this deck does not yet exist, it is on my must-have list. I eagerly await its completion.

I have the Goddess deck by Demarco. I find the art somewhat aggressive looking but I really enjoy the book. I have several of Diana Cooper’s decks- dragons, archangel animal, and just got the new unicorn deck! I love her! Thanks for sharing your favorites! I also really enjoy all of Collette Baron Reid’s decks. The Oracle of the Fairies deck by Karen Kay is pretty magical also.

Hello! 🙂 I have never used Oracle or Tarot. I’m a “late boomer”, new to all this but I’m curious. Excuse my innocence, but what is the true difference? I never really knew about Oracle cards, and was always scared to death of Tarot (I was raised Catholic but not practicing, but I am Christian/spiritual) I’ve had an understanding that Tarot was “dangerous” to mess with, a big “no-no” and messing with it could attract dark energy into your life, kinda like a Ouija board and could seriously regret it. This is only my perception from past influences, don’t know if it’s true. I had my cards read (tarot) twice just for “fun” by a co-worker and once at a small town Fair, and then afterwards talking with others I had an “Oh crap” moment and thought that it was “dangerous” to mess with and thought maybe I shouldn’t have let them read me. I’ve been told when you try to delve into the future, to predict or change in any way, it’s dark energy, and not sure if I believe that or not but it’s kinda scary lol. But Oracle cards seem different to me for some reason. Just my intuition I guess because I know NOTHING about them or either really. What IS the difference, and are these Oracle cards spiritually “safe”? Is there a way to tell which one would be the safest for an absolute beginner like me? I don’t want to get “over my head” and mess with something I shouldn’t but obviously you can probably tell I’m drawn to the idea and am in need of some guidance and I’m a “lone wolf” in my social circle I guess. I am looking for a way to open up my intuition, work on my spiritual growth and life path so the Work Your Light one sounds like a good fit but I love Mother Earth/nature so the Sacred Forest might be a better start…But I love Crystals so maybe the Crystal Keepers is more for me?? Ugh!! I need an Oracle deck to help me decide which deck to get! Or if I should get one at all!! Or maybe get them all! Hahaha!! Help! : )
It’s a huge topic and not really what this post is about. Tarot is a tradition with usually 78 cards, specific suits and card names and symbolism. The first people that used it in this form were European Christians (it’s filled with medieval Christian symbolism) and there was no problem with it till much later. Keep in mind the fanatical people that tried to ban Tarot were book burners and burned innocent people too. Tarot isn’t dark and most these ideas are based on a lack of understanding plus Hollywood. It’s no different than any spiritual tool and you should always cleanse the cards and you can use protection (like I would with any tool or spiritual work). Using Tarot isn’t for everyone and if there is a lot of fear then that won’t help. Read a book on Tarot history and tradition.
Modern readers use it more for personal development and self-reflection than prediction. Our natural intuition is predictive so asking about the possible future isnt wrong in my book. As for the oracles any you mentioned would be suitable for beginners but go with which one attracts you the most. Sacred Forest would be a good choice from what you said.

I invested in my first oracle deck I think close to six years ago now it is in fact the Ask Your Guides Oracle Deck by Sonia Choquette which I refer to regularly and enjoy working with, the second deck that I own is The White Light Oracle Deck by Alana Fairchild, I love the artwork in this deck and of course the messages that come through are always clear. The last oracle deck that I invested in was the oracle deck as mentioned in the blog is the Keepers Of The Light Oracle Deck by Kyle Gray which I also refer to regularly I particularly like that it contains information about ascended masters and again it always helps guide me when ever I seek it’s assistance.
I have Diana Coopers Archangel Deck and love it.
Ome of my all time favorite decks is The Liquid Crystal Oracle by Justin Moikeha Asar – so powerful. I also love the Crystal Ally cards by Naisha Ashian and the Crystal Mandal Oracle by Alana Fairchild

You can’t see inside a box of cards so sometimes you may choose cards packs that you would not if you could open it up and see inside. Cant wait to see your set.
It is a beautiful painting of a lion, isn’t it? That one is from the Messengers Oracle. I recommend you look on Youtube for a ‘flipthrough’ (a quick look through all the cards) or a ‘walkthrough’ (a more in-depth look at the cards) of any deck you are interested it.
I also use the Spirit Messages deck & get pulled to it a lot out of my standard 5 I use for ppl. They give ppl exactly what they need to hear & are always right on point!
The Earth Magic deck us also really good. It’s more intuitive on ur part as a reader for the person, but always tap into what the person needs.

I was going to go with The Light Oracle deck, but on reading through the entire list I am drawn to The Messenger Oracle, although I must say the artwork, for me, is not one I normally would be drawn to alone. Hello Ethan, Oracle decks are my not-so-secret addiction. At the moment I have 26 decks, but that could change if I find another on sale that I fancy! I do have some favourites but try to use them all, sometimes asking my pendulums to choose a deck for me. I have 3 that you mention. If I want an honest answer, tell it like it is answer I will often pick the Energy Oracle deck, Wisdom of the Oracle by Colette Baron Reed. I have a few by her and also by Denise Linn. Oh but there are so many and I love them all I also journal on some cards I draw too., and sometimes it turns into channeling with answers coming through. Great reviews! 3 of the decks I use are on your list! I love Denise Linns Sacred Forest and draw one everyday at the moment. The meditations that go along with them are amazing!! My favourite Kyle Gray deck is the Angels and Ancestors.
I am very intrigued by the oracle messenger deck. As I seem to be drawn to nature and see tree spirits everywhere. I will have to look into that one.
Another good one is the good earth deck by Steven ??(can’t remember his last name). But wonderfully illustrated and clear messages.

I recently purchased the Astral Realms Crystal Oracle and absolutely love it – I think you will, too. It is a small deck, each card devoted to a crystal and chakra association, and may incorporate a planet, sun, moon, element, etc. The booklet offers an activity for each card. Very soothing and positive.
