Do you need to store all crystals separately? Will different crystals clash or interfere with each other’s energy if you don’t? Is storing crystals together harmful, or is this a myth?
Don’t store Your Crystals Together?
This is a common question I get asked, especially from people new to crystal healing or who are growing their crystal collection. So, I think it’s about time I shared what I believe for everyone here so you can decide for yourself.
As always, this is just my perspective. Welcome to planet Earth. If you’re new here, people have different opinions of things like crystals and everything. We don’t all agree, and I’m glad we can all decide to work with crystals our way. This article is designed to make you think, though…

What Are They saying?
First, let’s clarify “store crystals separately“. They usually suggest that all crystals or minerals of the same type are stored separately. For example, all your Amethyst together, all your Black Tourmaline, all your Rose Quartz, in one place, not mixed with other crystals.
They usually believe that the stones are somehow negatively impacted by being kept together. Or that the energies are maybe confused or mixing in a way that clashes or limits their properties. But does it?
What You Need To Consider About Storing Crystals
Whenever I hear things like this about crystals, it tells me something straight away. People who do this must have a small amount of crystals or a lot of space in their homes. When you are just starting out, this is quite possible, but over time, it becomes impossible to maintain – unless you want to turn your home into a mineral museum.

Why I Don’t Think This is Very Practical
This form of organisation does make finding the crystal you want easier, assuming everything is labelled or in a storage box or shelf system. However, storing every crystal or each type of crystal/mineral in its own compartment, box, or shelf will eventually become an impossible task to maintain for most of us.
Then there’s the issue of sizes, raw crystals vs polished and tumbled stones. Storing Amethyst crystal points with tumbles or carved shapes is a recipe for damaged stones and scratched crystals (a lesson we often learn the hard way). So I assume they will have to have a separate storage for each crystal shape and form of the same type of stone?
Why This Does Not Make Much Sense To Me
Even when I look at this from a metaphysical perspective, I struggle to see things the same way. Everything in the mineral kingdom shares a space with other crystals. Just like everything in nature. They still maintain their own individual energy and consciousness.

“Nature loves diversity, but humans don’t.“
What about your essential oil or ritual oil collection? Do the oils lose their effectiveness just because they are stored with other oils from different plants and resins? Do I need a separate box for all my different incenses?
Is a bunch of flowers in my home somehow causing bad vibes? Do I need a separate vase for each type of flower? Just something to think about.
I sometimes think these ideas are more about the people who do this, rather than anything else. Crystal grids use a variety of crystals, too. Chakra jewellery, or most crystal jewellery, is a combination of different stones and metals (also minerals).
I do wonder if the people who say store crystals separately practice what they preach. Do they store all their crystal jewellery separately, too?
What about crystal shops or stalls at gem shows or markets? Yes, the energy can be a bit overwhelming, but I don’t feel the crystals are affected or harmed in any way.

Clashing Crystal Energy?
All crystals have their own energy and work in different ways. It’s my view that when the crystals are NOT being actively used, such as being worn, carried on you, placed on your chakras, used for your home’s energy/feng shui or as part of a crystal grid, they are not really activated.
Stored crystals are still themselves, but enter a more dormant mode. That means they aren’t beaming intentions or working on your chakras now. If you are sensitive, you might feel this like the crystal has been sleeping while it was not in use.
Crystals stored together will adjust to crystals around them, but their energy field is more internal now. So I don’t really believe there is much chance of any clashing when in storage.
What I Do When Organising Some Crystals
For years, I stored my tumbled stones together in a wooden chest. I never noticed any issues, and the crystals always felt good and worked well for me. Only later, when my tumbled stone collection grew big and I had more space, did I start to separate these stones. Not out of fear or for energy, but because it took me ages to find what I was looking for…
I didn’t sort them by crystal type because I would need like 100 plus compartments for single tumbled stones… I used a divided drawer with seven compartments for each chakra association. That way, I can go straight to the root chakra/grounding/protection stones to find my smoky quartz. It’s easy to select stones by intention this way, too.

Same with my crystal grid crystals when not in use. Because crystal grids are one of my main things (I’ve written two books on them), I needed a way to organise my gridding stones. I keep them in a craft supply set of drawers, labelled by crystal type in alphabetical order. This is the only way I would be able to find the stones I need for making or teaching crystal grids.
Other than these, the majority of my stored crystals are just organised by size, form, or groups when possible. They are not separated by the mineral type, and this has worked for me.
