Can you use gem chips or small crystals in crystal grids or are they too small or weak in energy? In this article, we’ll explore how crystal size affects grid work, whether small stones or tiny crystals and gemstones are effective and the optimal size of crystals for crystal grids.
Why This Question Comes Up So Often
I get it, buying crystals for crystal grids can add up. The smaller the crystal, the cheaper it is. Gem chips, the tiny, tumbled chips of crystals, used in jewellery and sometimes sold in bottles, are very affordable and seem attractive.
You might be looking at using small crystals for crystal grids because of the lack of space. Another thing I see is people buying a crystal grid base online and it’s about the size of your palm or even smaller (always check the size before ordering). Regular tumbled stones won’t even fit on these…

Does Crystal Size Matter in Crystal Grids?
I’ve spoken about the size of crystals on here before and covered this topic in my detailed guide, Crystal Grids Power 2. For those who are new or who haven’t read this yet, here’s my perspective again.
Generally, the size of the crystals does have an impact on the energy. If you can sense crystal energy and you hold a small stone, then hold a big crystal cluster, then touch a huge display crystal – the difference is very noticeable.
However, there are exceptions and variables to consider. When it comes to high-quality gemstones that are small, these can also pack a punch. It’s more about the purpose. Smaller crystals and stones worn on the body as jewellery are effective and perfect for this purpose.

I’m not saying bigger is better. Even though a huge one-pound amethyst crystal point is very powerful. It wouldn’t be practical to wear it or carry it around. It would also likely be too strong anyway. Large crystals are better for enhancing the energy of a room or your home.
Tiny tumbled stones and “gem” chips are rarely gem quality anyway (so they won’t have the intense energy of a ruby gemstone, for example). Just one regular-sized tumbled stone from any crystal shop could be the equivalent of 15 – 20 of these chips.
Gem chips alone always look lost to me on the average crystal grid base (7-8″). Your eyes know when something is out of balance. Trust your sense of seeing what looks right.
To me, energetically speaking, little crystals generally lack “oomph” in crystal grids. Plus, trying to place tiny crystals on a regular or little crystal grid can be really tricky. I’m not saying to use them at all, though. See my crystal grid below – more on this later…

Recommended Sizes of Crystals For Crystal Grids
Tumbled Stones
For most of the crystals in crystal grids (Support Stones, not the larger Centre Stone), I recommend the regular medium-sized tumbled stones that you can find in any crystal shop. These vary in size but can be anything from 2 to 3.5cm on average. This is a rough guide, there’s no need to measure every tumbled stone you have!
Regular tumbled stones are not only useful to have in your collection because single ones can be carried on you or placed on a chakra for personal use, but they are ideal for gridding. They are one of the most commonly available forms of stone, and you can find almost any crystal in this shape. Common stones are affordable but expect to pay more for rare crystals.

Some crystals are only available in very small sizes, such as Peridot, for example. Also, with rare or expensive crystals, it is just not reasonable to find something bigger. In these cases its fine to use little stones – the other crystals in your grid should be larger, though!
Crystal Points
With crystal points, these tend to be a bit longer. Just see what fits in your grid and looks right to you. Do they fit in your grid, or are they too long or bulky? Usually, the most common crystal points, such as clear quartz, Amethyst or Smoky Quartz, are 4cm or more, with some being chunky.
PLEASE REMEMBER: These sizes are all relative to the average-sized crystal grid. Try to avoid overcrowding crystals. If you have a big crystal grid, you might need bigger crystals. If you are creating a location-based grid, around your home, for example, that would also be more effective with larger crystals.

What Small Crystals and Gem Chips Are Best Used For
I will occasionally use small crystals as a supplement to the crystals of my crystal grid design. It adds a bit more crystal energy, but it’s subtle to me and not essential. You could use tiny crystals to fill in the points of the sacred geometry symbol, like the flower of life. Crystal chips can be lined up to form a line, circle or shape, if you have the patience for this…
I do find this is a lot more fiddly, as they are small, it’s much harder to stop the crystals from moving or getting knocked. Cleaning these grids of dust is also a bit of a nightmare. Another reason I prefer and recommend that you use medium-sized tumbled stones for grids.
Why Add Small Crystals To Crystal Grids:
- Supporting your crystal grid’s needed stones
- Pattern amplification
- Filling geometric points
