Discover seven crystals for Winter Solstice to awaken your inner light on the longest night of the year. Harness the energy the Sun’s return and the seasonal shift with sacred stones to reflect, release and prepare for the new year.
The Power Of The Winter Solstice
The Winter Solstice occurs in midwinter when one of Earth’s poles is tilted farthest away from the Sun. The Sun makes its lowest journey through the sky during this time. This marks the shortest day of the year in terms of daylight and the longest night of the year.

Although solar light is at its lowest point, it marks the return of the sun’s energy which will now begin to grow each day. The ancients were very aware of this time and held Winter Solstice based festivals and ceremonies. Common themes at this time are the rebirth of the Sun, evergreens, light and fire.

Seven Crystals For Winter Solstice
1. CITRINE
I consider Citrine a crystal of the Sun. The golden yellow light of this crystal anchors the solar energy of the sun. Citrine helps you think more positively about things in these darker days. You can use it to represent the light of the sun if you have an altar. Citrine also has some detoxifiying properties so it helps with clearing old energy that you are ready to release.

2. LAPIS LAZULI
A stone that looks like a clear winter’s sky at night, full of stars. Lapis Lazuli teaches us how to self reflect. The Winter solstice is an astronomical turning point, a gateway. At this time of year this spiritual stone assists you in going inward and gaining clarity on what you want or where you are heading. It’s perfect for time alone to reflect on your year and move forward.

3. AMBER
Amber has a long history of use by humans as a sacred gemstone. It carries both the energy of the forest and earth being fossilised tree resin. But also captures the essense of the fiery suns light. It can be used to represent the precious energy of our sun during the Winter solstice. Amber is healing, absorbs negative energy and offers protection at sacred sites.

4. ARAGONITE
The red and orange Aragonite, especially the clusters are high energy crystals for the winter solstice. They anchor the element of fire to increase motivation. Aragonite deeply cleanses stubborn blocks and your aura. This crystal supports you in overcoming obstacles in your life.

5. BLACK OBSIDIAN
Yes, you could also use any of the dark Obsidians, including Snowflake Obsidian or Gold Sheen too. Black Obsidian is known for its ability to sever ties to negativity. It was traditionally used for blades and spears. It’s cutting energy, combined with your intention is helpful to release anything heavy or that’s dragging you down from the previous year, including toxic people.

6. SARDONYX
This is a combination of Sard (brown Carnelian) with black and or white Onyx banding. Sardonxy is a wonderful crystal for this point in the year because it supports tapping into your determination to keep going despite any challenges. It holds the power of Saturn to structure plans and goals for the months ahead. A good monk mode /hermit mode support stone.

7. GOLDEN HEALER QUARTZ
Another alternative crystal for the winter solstice is Golden Healer Quartz. These crystals also work with and emanate the energy of the Sun. Golden Healer Quartz is great for midwinter because it raises your energy and lifts your mood. Many of us feel the winter blues at this point so it is a very good option to wear or carry around this time.

Simple Shadow & Light Balance Ritual
- Take one solar crystal, such as Citrine, Sunstone or Golden Healer Quartz.
- One Saturnian or black cleansing crystal such as Black Obsidian, Black Onyx or Black Kyanite.
- One yellow, gold or white candle within a candle holder to represent the fire element and the sun.
- Place your black crystal to the left to represent the longest night and releasing the past.
- Place the Citrine or other solar crystal to the right to represent the return of the sun and a new solar year.
- Light the candle and set your intention to release what does not serve you and welcome the positive changes and growth of the new year.
- Sit and meditate while it burns for a while and let it burn out completely. Or light it every day over the next few nights until it has burned down.

Totally agree with you there (especially about Citrine). I’m not very aligned with most of the organic crystals – except Jet – so instead of Amber, I’d deploy Mexican Fire Opal. I’ve got a nugget of it which could easily be mistaken for Amber… until the viewer turns it over and the glorious green and purple lights show!
Lovely suggestion, Cherry. Yes Mexican Fire Opal is stunning and you just made me think of the Northern Lights with your description
