I often get asked why I don’t cleanse crystals with Selenite (Satin Spar). In this post, I’ll share my personal reasons for avoiding this method and explain why I don’t include it in my books or videos, plus what I prefer to do instead for cleansing crystals…
Can You Cleanse Crystals With Selenite?
In my YouTube video on safe ways to cleanse your crystals, some seem surprised that I didn’t mention using Selenite to cleanse crystals. In fact, just lately between comments and emails, I seem to be asked about using this popular method several times a week…
It’s quite hard to explain my reasoning in a comment online. And although I have covered this years ago in a blog post I did about Self-Cleansing Crystals, I feel I need to cover this in a separate focused post, here where I can direct people. I may also make a video in the future too.

Is Selenite Self-Cleansing?
I’ve always said since day one that I believe ALL crystals need cleansing and I meant it. I cleanse all my crystals, including Selenite (AKA Satin Spar). Selenite is a super powerful cleansing crystal but I feel that it still can hold negative or unwanted energy.
I can’t ignore my ability to sense things or what the crystals have told me over the years.
However, I am only human and we all have different experiences and opinions. This may come as a shock but the crystal community is divided on self-cleansing crystals. Even among those that believe, few agree on which ones. Some people will use crystals like Selenite to cleanse crystals and some don’t and that’s okay.
I could be wrong about this but I would rather be on the safe side and cleanse all my crystals. Cleansing Selenite won’t do any harm and I am cleansing other crystals anyway.
Does Selenite Cleanse Other Crystals?
The short answer is, yes. But to me, ALL cleansing crystals will be able to cleanse anything or anyone that comes into contact with them. So, I am not saying Selenite can’t cleanse your crystals. My issue is more with the self-cleansing belief and practicality.

Why I Don’t Use Selenite To Cleanse Crystals
If I were to leave my crystals on a Selenite slab or ‘charging plate’, then I believe some of that negative energy will be absorbed into the Selenite and remain afterwards. Simple solution? You might suggest I just cleanse the Selenite afterwards. But that’s the problem. I now have TWO jobs, cleanse the crystals, then cleanse the crystal I used to cleanse the crystals…
What would happen if I used another Selenite to cleanse that Selenite? That would become a never ending cycle. How about I use another more traditional cleansing method, like smoke or sound to cleanse the Selenite slab after use?

But, if I have the incense or the singing bowl that I believe cleanses crystals – why woudn’t I just save myself the time and just use that cleansing method in the first place? I don’t teach methods I don’t use myself or that I feel are hard work.
A Word About Overcomplicated Cleansing Methods
I have had people suggest here and on my content that we bury our crystals in the earth for one month… That may well work but it’s inpractical and unrealistic for most people. I think people overcomplicate things when there are so many simple, fast and effective methods to cleanse crystals. Be careful who you listen to online...

You do you! I am not telling you what to do here, just sharing my perspective and practice with crystals. I only teach from experience and what I believe myself. Some people use this method and some don’t.

I don’t use Selenite for much of anything, because I don’t have much affinity with it.
I do occasionally use Black Tourmaline to rid another crystal of negativity, usually when that crystal is crying out to be relieved of it *right NOW*, and I’ve been able to actually see the bad energy, like dark grey clouds around the stone, just vanishing, to be replaced with pure, clear white light. It always works, and of course, Black Tourmaline does transmute negative energy. But, I don’t use this as a regular thing, since I don’t feel it’s fair on the Tourmaline.
Of other crystals, I can only say this: I’ve encountered many, many different types over the years, and each and every one – sometimes even Black Tourmaline – will need to be cleansed at some point.
I find the best way to do this depends on the size of the collection. Mine’s expanded a lot just recently, and it’s now becoming impractical to use Cleansing Breath or running water on that many (especially the way water prices have recently risen). The Universal Light cleanse is quite good, and there’s also music on Youtube that’s specifically composed for cleansing crystals. But the finest way I’ve found to cleanse any crystal, of any type, size or properties, is pure Love.
Hi Ethan,
You mention that some people cleanse crystals by burying them in the ground. Would placing them on an earthing mat have the same effect?
The crystal and metaphysical world are rife with over complicating everything and why I tend to stay away from the main stream thought processes regarding this. Over the years I have found that keeping things as simple as possible is much better and if it works for you, run with it, there are no hard and fast rules with this. Personally I do all my “cleansing” with sound bowls or tuning forks as that helps reset the rhythms and vibrations of the stones in the easiest way, I can also reset a whole room in one go and if I make enough noise, then the whole house!
But, as with all things, find you won way, listen to your mind, body and soul and be guided by it, what works for one, will not work for another and that is a message that is not put across enough in this field!
