Should you only use crystals for your zodiac sign? Do you have to follow astrology rules to work with crystals? In this article, I clear up any confusion and share my crystal healing perspective on astrology and crystals…
Common Questions About Crystals & Zodiac Signs
One of the questions I’m often asked is whether someone should only use crystals associated with their zodiac sign or astrological birth chart. Occasionally, people will even avoid certain stones because they’ve been told the crystal belongs to a sign or planet that is “incompatible” with them or that it will cause bad luck.
I’m seeing this a lot on my YouTube channel, so let’s talk about it, clear up any confusion and let me clarify my perspective on this for everyone.
Different Astrological Gemstone Traditions
There are different traditions and systems when it comes to astrology, crystals and gemstones. These are the main ones you should be aware of:
- Vedic Gem Astrology
- Western Astrology Correspondences
- Traditional Birthstones
Some traditions, particularly Vedic gem astrology, have very specific rules about which gemstones should or should not be worn depending on your birth chart. But other systems are much more flexible.

My Approach To Crystal Healing
I do not practice or teach Vedic gem astrology (AKA Indian Astrology). I’m not an astrologer, though I do use some astrology in my life and books, based on Western Astrological sources. I practice and teach modern crystal healing.
If you are familiar with my work, you will see that I generally choose and recommend crystals based on their energetic properties and meanings. I believe how you feel about the crystal and your experience are more important and determine any compatibility issues, just like food, skincare, or herbs, for example.
In Crystal healing, crystals are chosen by:
- Properties
- Intention
- Intuition
Although astrology could be used, it is not required in this system. Very few of the most well-respected authors and teachers in the crystal healing world even mention astrological associations for this reason. When they do, it is not a strict rule for crystal compatibility.
Why Choosing Crystals By Astrology Can Be Limiting
With respect to those of you who do follow astrological gem systems, it isn’t for everyone. If you’re exploring crystal healing, this can make things restrictive and tricky. I see a lot of fear around using the ‘wrong’ stone. My only concern is that you might be avoiding potentially helpful crystals.
Finding astrologically compatible alternatives must be time-consuming. Add to this that not all sources agree on planetary or zodiacal correspondences. You will have to pick a system and stick to it, but even then, many crystals now on the market have no historical astrological associations…

Crystals & Zodiac Sign Elements?
There are different systems for element associations with crystals, with many modern crystal healers not even working with the elements. My crystal element associations are intuitive and more colour-based. I feel many crystals are a mixture of elements, too. I’ve heard people say things like “water signs shouldn’t work with fire element crystals“.
I don’t really see it like that. Sometimes the energy we need most is the one that balances our natural tendencies. In modern Western astrology, there is a little chart that appears on your astrological birth chart (Natal Chart). It’s sometimes called the ‘Element Weight Chart‘, where the planets and important aspects appear in a box based on the element of the zodiac sign they were in at birth (see diagram above).

Astrologers get a better picture of your dominant element or weaknesses here (rather than only looking at your Sun sign). The ideal chart should have planets in all four elements. A lack of one isn’t to be avoided, it needs working on. Crystals could be helpful for this, but not if you’re avoiding crystals based on their elements…

Astrology Doesn’t Need To Be Restrictive
In my free ebook, Discover Your Guardian Stone I used astrology, drawing partly on the European tradition for planetary associations. It was my own system, but not how I normally select crystals on a day-to-day basis or in my books or videos. Someone once wrote me an email refusing to work with her Guardian Stone because “It’s not my birth stone!“. It’s such a shame that people are missing out on so many crystals because of these beliefs.
To me, planet and zodiac sign associations and even birth stones are about resonance. You absolutely can carry or wear a stone based on your zodiac sign. However, I don’t see this as other signs are in conflict and we must avoid crystals according to astrology.
This is just my perspective and the way I work. You may follow a tradition that has these rules but crystal healing does not use this system as a rule for crystal selection.
My Final Note
“For me, a crystal’s usefulness isn’t limited to one zodiac sign or planet. When selecting stones, focus on your intention, use what resonates and always trust your experience.”

Crystal astrology: well, for me, no. It’s all about what resonates, no matter what element or planet it’s connected with.
One of the crystals with which I have the strongest connection, is Fluorite. Being a Virgo, I shouldn’t, according to crystal astrology, be able to work with Fluorite, because it’s supposedly a stone for my opposing sign, Pisces. I guess that’s because Pisces are said to be unfocused and daydreamers, but Fluorite balances that out with its powers of logic, rational thought and organisation. I’m good at logic and rational thought, and fairly organised but not the most organised person on the planet.
Yet my mother, a Pisces if ever there was one, could never get Fluorite to respond to her.
Make of that what you will, but the planets don’t seem to me to have as much influence (and why would they, since crystals are born of the Earth in the vast majority of cases) as some folks seem to think. At the minimum, I think all the significant aspects of a person”s birth chart should be taken into consideration when they use this method to choose crystals: sun sign, ascendant and midheaven at the minimum; and also, when like me that person is at or near the cusp of two signs, the crystals for the ‘nearby’ sign can also be looked at.
Balance: yes, quite a lot of the time. But not always: sometimes I’m called to crystals which balance my weaknesses, but at other times I’m inexorably drawn to those which share my strongest qualities.
Love and Light.
