Crystals For Sleep, Which To Avoid In Your Bedroom

Crystals For Sleep, Which To Avoid In Your Bedroom

What are the best crystals for sleep problems and disorders? Could your crystals be keeping you up all night? Learn which crystals to use and  avoid in the bedroom!
This is something many people ask me about. Sleep problems are becoming more common and people are looking for natural alternative treatments. What I have to say may shock some of you and may seem different to what others commonly say.
The thing is I hear from so many people that are making the same mistakes with placing certain crystals around their bed that I had to write this guide.

The Biggest Myth About Crystals For Sleep

Many people find crystals give them a sense of wellbeing. Just looking at them can make them feel good. It is understandable that we like to have lots of crystals around us and can build up quite a collection.
Just like in nature, we have natural herbs and plants with healing properties. Some herbs and essential oils are relaxing (Lavender) others are stimulating (Lemon). Crystals are no different!
Filling your bedroom with tones of different crystals can be overstimulating to many people. Not all crystals are supportive to sleep, some will have the opposite effect… If you went to sleep in a crystal cave, I bet you would not sleep a wink… Too much energy!

TIP: Try to focus on balance in the bedroom, especially around your bed area. Less is more.

My Experience With Crystals For Sleep

I have experimented with crystals during my sleep for years. I soon realised that some crystals might be great if you want to have lots of vivid dreams but that is not my idea of a good nights sleep. When we sleep we are in a receptive state and can be even more sensitive to crystal energy.
I now use crystals near my bed with caution. If it disturbs my sleep I move it far away and see if things return to normal.
Sleep disorders are very complex and they can have many different causes that should be addressed. If it is serious, always see a Doctor. Crystals may not be the solution. That said, there are crystals that I have found to support sleep.
Before we get to those, I want to clarify what to try to avoid in the bedroom before you add any new crystals.

Tips for Your Bedroom

In Feng Shui, your bedroom should ideally be a place of peace, rest and relaxation. I understand that some people can only keep their crystals in their bedroom in a shared home but you can minimise the effects of over energizing the bed area.
Your bed is the place that crystals are going to have the greatest effect when placed around or under it. The head of the bed which includes the pillows, headboard and nearest side cabinet are the most stimulating places to put crystals. Choose crystals wisely and position them carefully.

CRYSTALS TO AVOID NEAR THE BED:

Don’t store your crystals under your bed

Avoid very large crystals near the head of the bed

Spiritual or ‘high vibration’ crystals can be over stimulating

Never place Crystal Points, pointing directly at your head

Fire element crystals can be over energising

Don’t hang crystals over your bed

Third Eye or Crown Chakra Crystals can disturb sleep

Avoid crystals with action orientated properties

Don’t have too many different crystals near your head

Psychic or dream enhancing Crystals disturb sleep

No Standing Crystal Points or Pyramids by the bedside

Crystals For Sleep Support

Now that’s out of the way, let’s look at some of the stones that are supportive of sleep. Look for crystals that are of the Earth element, these are commonly browns, earthy reds and black. Crystals that are grounding or associated with the Lower Chakras are usually very helpful (sleep is a Lower Chakra activity).
Crystals that are calming, soothing, stress-reducing, comforting and cleansing. For shapes try to stick to rounded forms like Tumble Stones, Eggs and Spheres. I will share with you some of my specific crystal recommendations below, but first, let’s look at how to use them.
CAUTION: Watch out for crystals that have very mixed properties. Like grounding stones that also have energizing properties!

How To Use Crystals For Sleep

You can place a crystal for sleep (the ones I recommend below) by your bedside, under your pillow or wear them as a bracelet for example. You can also place one under your bed. Remember to regularly cleanse crystals placed near you while you sleep, as they will absorb a lot of energies. For a special Crystal Grid for Sleep that can be placed around your bed, please see my book Crystal Grids Power!
TIP: Some people who are sensitive to energy, find crystals under their pillow to be too strong. Try the bedside cabinet.

Other Crystals In The Bedroom?

If you are not sure if the crystals you have are supportive of sleep then you really should invest in some good crystal books (see link below). If in doubt, crystals are best placed in other parts of the home. If you can’t do that then keep them away from under, over and around the bed just to be safe.
The end of the bedroom, towards the corners and away from the bed, is best. At the end of the day, you will be able to test things out. If a new crystal is disturbing your sleep since being placed in your bedroom, move it away or out of the room. Everyone is different and only you know your own energy.

Why No Amethyst?

Some of you may be surprised I do not mention Amethyst. Amethyst is often recommended in books for sleep problems and insomnia. When I tried this I think I had some of the worst sleeps of my life. I receive so many emails and  talk to so many people confused why Amethyst seems to have the opposite effect on them too. They experience restless nights, disturbing dreams and even nightmares.
It is true that Amethyst is cleansing and calming for meditation but other properties are not supportive during sleep time. Amethyst is a very spiritual stone and carries high vibration energies which are very stimulating.
It activates the Upper Chakras, like the Third Eye and Crown Chakras, both activate the mind and psychic states. That’s great for dream work, Lucid Dreaming and Astral Projection but not for a peaceful nights sleep!
You can still use Amethyst for sleep problems during a Crystal Healing session, meditations and during the day to cleanse your energy. At night it is just a bit too strong for most people. Amethyst is okay in the bedroom, just not too close to your bed, head or upper Chakras while you sleep.

Thanks for this post. Wondered about Amethyst myself as different sources say different things, but due to its high psychic nature it makes sense that it wouldn’t necessarily support sleep.
Also I’ve been told with some crystals “the darker the better” so I’m just wondering if colour intensity matters?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

If you mean for darker crystals for sleep, that could work as you would be using Earthy grounding stones. But if you mean in general then I personally would not say that. I think a deep colour is a good thing but some light pastel crystals can also be very powerful.

      1. Matthew Miller

I’m assuming that lightly saturated super clean Paraiba crystal is not good for sleep? I have a purple cats Eye tourmaline round and a Paraiba crystal I have wire wrapped together, should I not keep them near me while in bed? Also how far away do large collections need to be from my bed? I have s small room and MASSIVE collection. Thank you ! I know I need to get them away from me I’m just wondering how urgent is it like do I need to do it right now before I go to bed tonight ?

        1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Matthew, I wrote this article to raise awareness and to give people some guidance on how to make better choices. If any crystals you wear or keep next to your bed carry some of the properties I describe above (not conductive to restful sleep) then you know my opinion. Your experience may be different. If you have a small space then it is completely acceptable that you keep lots of crystals in your bedroom but you can still apply my other tips. I dont recommend storing under the bed or near the head. Far away from your bed as possible and towards the foot of the bed is better. Dont worry about this, make changes when and if you can and test them out.

        2. Cherry

Matthew, I wouldn’t fret too much about Tourmaline, it’s a very soothing crystal. I have quite a significant number of them on my bedside table (they’re my babies, I like to have them close), and even the more active, energetic Red, Peach and Canary ones don’t disrupt my sleep; on the contrary, they help a lot! The others you might want to avoid are the Solar gems (Peridot, Amber, Yellow Sapphire, Golden Quartz, Citrine, Sunstone and Heliodor; some people also include Ruby and Pyrite in this group). Their potent connection to the Sun and Solar energy can definitely disturb sleep. That said, I always keep two Heliodors in my bra, and last night I fell asleep cuddling my Sunstone… but then, I do have a powerful connection to the Sun myself, and that’s probably why I can get away with that.

You might also wish to remove Moldavite (if you have any), Labradorite/Spectrolite/Galaxyite, Obsidian, Amethyst and Clear Quartz, because these crystals are potent psychic stimulators. Galaxyite has a softer energy than either Labradorite or Spectrolite, but can still give you some very intense dreams when you’re in need of a good night’s rest.

As far as other crystals to move further from your sleeping area go, you’d need to conduct your own experiments, because everyone’s different.

          Love and Light.

Thank you Ethan for your crystaI’s article re help to sleep. My experience (and it is only my experience!) with crystals varies from year to year and at the moment only sodalite (wind! and sodium) is helping me. Amazing! I also have used this year aqua marine, howlite and sometimes lepidolite (lithium). Depending on what sort of emotions and planets etc…but I will try the ones you mention namely black and red.

      3. Hana Rasekh

Hello! i saw one of the “don’t” for one of them saying no pyramids by your bedside just wanna know why:) , is the energy too strong?

          1. Daniel V

What about Unakite? I have mine being re wrapped currently but I have been very surprised by the nights of sleep I’ve had while wearing it. That or i sleep with Charoite around my neck.

      4. Ava

        Hi
I have some crystals and i placed them wherever in my room then i had some trouble sleeping can you please tell me where to place each crystal in each area of the room like the 4 corners of the room, bedside table, window sill, bathroom and The legs of the bed. I have amethyst, rose Quartz, clear quartz, fluorite, citrine, obsidian and citrine.

        1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Ava, this article explains all my advice for which crystals are best for the bedroom, which are not and where and how to avoid placing them for sleep. I don’t recommend placing any crystal in any location without having a reason for it.

          1. Ava

            Hi
Can you tell me where to place the crystals I mentioned in my bedroom because i don’t know where to place them.
            Thank you

          2. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi, it’s not something I can really do for you. it all depends on ‘why’ you want to place those crystals in your bedroom. The size and the shape also have meanings. Thats why I’ve written this post to help people place crystals in the bedroom themselves. Please read the sections above titled ‘Tips for your bedroom’ and ‘crystals for sleep support’ and the now updated section ‘Other crystals for sleep’ if you are unsure. Im so pleased i came to this web page !
Id read that having Amethyst and moonstone under the pillow is meant to aid sleep and connect you to the Moon’s sleepy tone. Well i am influenced by the moon greatly but in an opposite affect . Depending on what cycle.
So i have had them both under my pillow the last couple of nights and have had the worst sleep ive had in a long time. I guess this explains why. Than you very much for these words of wisdom !

    3. Nayelis

Hi I have a clear quartz i was wondering does it protect me and what bad things can happens if I dont take care also how many wishes or things i can tell it like the max like the max I can tell it.

      1. Cherry

Nayelis, if you want to tell your wishes to a Clear Quartz, you’ll want one crystal – it can be raw, tumbled, shaped or even faceted, doesn’t matter – for each wish you want fulfilled.

As far as protection goes, absolutely Clear Quartz will do this for you, but its influence isn’t always easily detectable, and it cannot entirely stop bad things from happening. Trust your crystals, and they’ll work better for you.

        Love and Light.

  2. Carrie

    Hi Ethan,

Great article, it does help to clear off some of my concern. How about a small clear quart standing point, is it okay to be place on the small bedside table? I have got 2 different point of views on this. Some said it is good to be place in bedroom to absorb negative energy and to amplify my intentions together with my rose quartz but others articles said it is too much energy for bedroom.

    Thanks!

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Carrie, I personally would not recommend a clear Quartz standing point by the bed because although Quartz can cleanse it is also a powerful amplifier. If cleansing is important while you sleep use a dark stone like Black Tourmaline. Other parts of the bedroom are fine to have Clear Quartz. Test things out and see how it feels.

    1. David

Like wise. Selenite is the perfect sleep stone. It’s calming and protective but yet still gently uplifting. Leavrs you feeling refreshed but also energized in the motning. To me it acts like a mini force shield … Much like the moon it’s named after it reflects other energies.

Quite different to say Black tourmaline which I find acts almost like a sponge absorbing and grounding energy. It’s ultra protective …. But leaves me feeling drained and low energy.

      1. John

Interesting… I actually just bought 4 selenite towers and have a grid in my bedroom, with two on my nightstands. I have had a terrible night’s sleep every night for nearly a week. However, I have also felt fairly energized in the morning and throughout the next day. I think it’s the selenite. I am going to try moving them to another location and see how it goes.

        1. Paula

About 7years ago i got a selenite lamp for a gift with a pointed top. When my other lamp broke I put this in its place and for weeks i was not sleeping well at all until I realised it may be the chrystal lamp and It was. I moved it to my study desk and got my sleep patterns back to normal.

        2. Xenobia Bouknight

I just moved my selenite tower from the bedside stand to the living room. I was keeping it by the bed for cleansing my mind and my bracelets overnight but, now I’m wondering if they’ve been disturbing my sleep all this time.

          1. Cherry

Last week I put my only piece of Selenite, a 4″ heart (I’m very solar by nature so Selenite is a crystal I have to limit my exposure to, even though I love it) on my bedside table. I felt very safe, but was totally insomniac that night. The next morning I moved it to another room, and that night I slept beautifully. I think it has partly to do with which one you have more affinity for, the Sun or the Moon.

            Love and Light.

  3. Stefanina Baker

It’s interesting that you mention that about amythest. I put one in my pillow and have been having incredibly lucid and active dreams the past few months. I’m going to replace it with rose quartz to see if my sleep improves. Thanks!

  4. Stacy mudd

Someone told me to use amethyst I have been having trouble sleeping and was gonna try it tonight glad I read your article before I took that persons advice and have stayed up another sleepless night I we’ll be using rose quartz thanks again

      1. Mags

SAME! Ive always been a pretty hard sleeper and I recently placed a cluster of amethyst at my bed side and have been having crazy dreams!! But I actually love dreaming so I’m keeping it there, I still sleep great!

    1. Kayla

I have been sleeping with my purple amethyst, and if I take it away I will start to have really bad nightmares. Do you think you know why? Thanks

        1. butterflypoo

I used to have recurring nightmares, almost every night, until I started putting black tourmaline under my pillow. I have to charge it daily, even though black tourmaline is supposedly one that doesn’t need to be charged, but I was noticing an impact.

It doesn’t fight my insomnia but it has stopped the bad dreams in their tracks.

        2. Connie

My 19 year old son was having sleep problems as he seems to be exhibiting psychic abilities, like my older sister. He’s not afraid, but his abilities made it impossible to get a good night’s sleep (especially while at college). He began wearing a black tourmaline bracelet and placed an amethyst stone under his pillow. He told me he’s been sleeping much better and his psychic encounters have diminished!

          1. Cherry

Both Black Tourmaline and Amethysts are protective crystals; Black Tourmaline is a grounding one, so it returns any excess energy to the Earth. Most strongly psychic people I know find Amethyst helpful for sleep; I think that’s to do with its combination of spiritual (blue) and grounding (red) colour energy.

I keep all manner of crystals on my bedside table, including multiple different coloured Tourmalines, Clear Quartz, Heliodor, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Golden Healer Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Moonstone, Garnets, Howlite, Larimar, Topaz, Citrine, Celestite, Fluorite and Labradorite. But I wouldn’t advise this for many other people: I’m a crystal whisperer, able to work with almost all crystals which I’ve done for most of my life.

Rose Quartz is always a winner, Kunzite is usually good if you have it, and Fluorite is very soothing and conducive not only to good sleep, but also to lucid dreaming and improved dream recall.

  5. Janice

I have a rose quartz grid around my bed, have for awhile now and it is very comforting. Other crystals at the bedside or under my pillow change often. Current I have green fluorite and Mookaite under my pillow. I am going to try your recommended howlite. Thanks for the great article.

    1. Cherry

Yes, great combination! Fluorite is very soothing, and helps remember your dreams and improve lucid dreaming if that’s what you wish. Howlite is probably the gentlest of the natural lunar crystals. You might think about trying Opalite if Howlite should prove ineffective.

  6. Kim

Thank you for this article, I recently put amethyst on my bedside table and I have not been sleeping well. I will be moving that tonight as I’m sure that was the change that disrupted my sleeping.
    Thank you

        1. Anu

i wanted to put it on top of the drawers in my kids room. I was just impressed with crystal healing benefits i read about, so as a beginner i wanted to try some of the basic crystals which can help kids with better sleep, focus, study, calmness, etc. Also my 8 year old is short tempered and wants to have things arranged in a particular way. So may be something which can help her stay cool. Also if you can suggest any beginner crystals for kids in general which can be kept in the room.

          1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I may cover general stones for child’s bedroom in a future post. For now, I think you can see what I recommend for sleep and a calming bedroom atmosphere above, which I think is also suitable for a child’s bedroom.

          2. Cherry

            Hi Anu,

Fluorite is a good crystal for kids, as it has a calming energy. Celestite may perhaps be too high-vibration for them, but everyone reacts differently to crystals so all you can really do is follow your intuition as their mother and someone who wants what’s best for them, and try. Rose Quartz is another good kids’ crystal, and the gentle energy of Milky Quartz might also help.

Your eight-year-old sounds just like my husband lol! Again, Rose Quartz and Fluorite might help her to calm down; but I suggest you ask her about her reasons for wanting everything ‘just so’; it may be that she’s being guided (or it may equally well be that she’s like my husband: fussy). One thing that drives me nuts is if I put something down temporarily, then come back to it shortly after and find it gone, and nobody’s told me why they’ve moved it or where. My father did this a lot when I was in school; he’d move something I really needed for my homework, and not tell me where he’d put it; your daughter may be experiencing similar problems and be as fed up with it as I was. If that’s the case, of anything of a similar nature is going on, then try out Blue Lace Agate for improving her patience.

            Love and Light.

  7. Lisa

Thank you so much for all the information you provide. I recently read your books on healing stones for chakras and crystal grids. Both were excellent and helped me tremendously. The guidance you provide concerning comfortable ways to communicate while cleansing, balancing and activating crystals has been very helpful.

I placed the grid you recommended under my mattress last night but I used an amethyst in the middle instead of one of your recommendations. I slept but had a strange night. lol I’m going to replace it tonight with a red jasper. I’m using Howlites for the corners.

  8. Carmen

    Hi!
Thank you for this post! I love the pictures of your crystals and all the info about them. I have seen on your picture above, an amethyst cluster. I have a small trouble, to find out if I bought a auralite 23 or a phantome amethyst. In the shop it was sold like phantom amethyst. How can I send you a picture of it?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I could have a look but I do not see how someone would sell an expensive rare crystal like Auralite 23 as just an Amethyst Phantom. You could send a pic to my Facebook page or Instagram.

  9. Conny

    Hi Ethan,
I bought lots of beads/grids from a china post. Some i dont know if they are real stone. Do you have a simple trick how i can see? Some i hear difference in sound on stone table.
    Some i try with engraver.
Some feel much lighter than other, same amount.
    But not sure.
    Second question
How much beads/ how big stone do i have to wear, for purpose? (artose Pain)
    Thanks, Conny

  10. Kiran

    Hi! Ethan
    Thanks for the useful information.
Some people say one should not wear ‘Clear Quartz’ and ‘Citrine’ bracelet together. Is it true?

    1. Cherry

No, I can spare Ethan the trouble and tell you there is nothing wrong with combining Citrine and Clear Quartz.

Quite the reverse in fact! Citrine is not only a good helper when you want to make money; it’s also a very protective crystal. (Hot tip: for tooth pain, combine Citrine and Aquamarine. It works: I got a tooth abscess during lockdown 1.0; the combination not only shut down the pain, it also healed the infection). Clear Quartz, quite apart from being of the same crystal family, is a cleanser, purifier and amplifier which will boost the powers of any other crystal you pair it with.

  11. Gaye Eaves

Ah, very enlightening! This may explain why a small Amethyst tumble stone inside my pillow case did not help my sleep issues at all!! And my dreams, always vivid, were just off the charts! Not restful to dream like that and I woke up exhausted. Thank you for this article!

  12. Richelle

I wear an amethyst necklace that before today I never take off. I will be trying to go to bed without it tonight. thank you for the great articles.

  13. Elizabeth George-Hall

    Hi Ethan,
    A very good read.
I don’t use any of my crystals/stones for anything that I can’t fix myself. I believe it is what I can do for them than what they can do for me. I don’t believe they can fix organic problems only help heal the soul. But that is only my opinion.
With my guys, they know I am organic and get tired and not to keep me up late.
    Cheers 🙂

  14. Joasia

Hello! Apart of amethyst are there any other crystals that ehhance our ability to lucid dream or have astral projections?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!

  15. Ginny B.

Ethan, I was fascinated reading your suggestions as to what crystals work best for sleep, and weather to wear many crystals together or not. I Love Amethist it is my birth stone. I came down with Guillain Barre Syndrome 2years ago. I have been trying to research which stones, crystals, work best for the Nervous System. Any suggestions? I would love to hear from you with any imput you may have in regards to what would help with calming the Nerves, and what crystals, or stones might work best in my favor. Please get back to me. I will wait patiently to hear from you. Thank you, and sincerely Ginny B.

    1. Cherry

You will want to try out Fluorite for lucid dreaming, and Labradorite and/or Lapis Lazuli for astral travel. But please take it from someone who knows: first, don’t go astrally travelling just before bedtime, and second, make sure you have activated your soul anchor before you travel astrally. Your soul anchor is an infinitely elastic silver umbilical cord which keeps your soul linked firmly to your body; if you don’t activate it your body is at risk.

  16. Sidney

I have always slept with a howlite, lepidolite, and smokey quartz in an cloth pouch inside my pillow case! Large chunk of black tourmaline by my head board and a peach moonstone. I have a large smokey quartz generator also, by my head. I have put some smaller black tourmaline chunks under my boyfriends side of the bed, also.

  17. Laura

I just moved my hematite to my bedside table with my rose quartz and I’ve moved my clear quartz point across the room. I hope I sleep better tonight. Also would love to know thoughts on moonstone , blue calcite and blue celestite for sleep. Thank you.

      1. Steph

I know this is an old article (and comment) but I slept with Moonstone last night and it gave me the most terrifying dreams! The dreams were wild and vivid, and I actually had one of those nightmares where you wake up and feel like you might want to turn the light on lol I think I’ll be reserving my Moonstone for daytime use from now on lol looks like my sleep stone is back to Rose Quartz : )

    1. Jessica

Thank you for the great article! I have been sleeping with a a nice display of crystals across on the shelf of the head board, and been having fitful sleep. I have removed all but a delect few to try and see if they may have been the cause. Also I have a very special golden sheen obsidian sphere I am very partial too.. any thoughts on how that may affect sleep? I have seen conflicting information on other sites. Thanks again!

        1. Anne

I have had good results using a piece of rainbow obsidian at my feet but it needs frequent cleansing. A larger piece of black obsidian instead works from the protective aspect, but depends on what other crystals are adjacent to me whether I have a sound sleep or a vivid-dream sleep. Different people have different experiences, I suspect partly depends on what is needed at the time for one’s overall wellbeing. I could not tolerate selenite, especially in those twisted carved forms, for decades. After bringing moldavite in my life, I can now tolerate and accept selenite, but I still wouldn’t take it to be with me.

  18. Ashley

Amethyst actually helps me sleep! I had horrible sleep patterns, insomnia and nightmares every night until I put one by my bed. Now I sleep at a reasonable time, stay asleep, and the nightmares have stopped!

    1. Rosie

I have sleep patterns similar to yours awful! i never have a full nights sleep to the point it is now affecting my physical health:-( it sucks doesn’t it lol!

  19. Carol Mcintyre

Hi I wondered if you could help me I have been trying to deal with a spirt that keeps coming to me when I’m sleeping it comes in different disguises and in my dreams we are together like a couple I don’t no who this person is. I’m new to gem stones but I’ve bought black tourmalline selenite flourite and Amethyst I’ve put them on my night stand next to my bed & I wear flourite amethyst bracelet all day & sleep in them also I sleep in a labradorite ring the black tourmalline I’ve got recently bought when I hold it it get very hot & vibrates that strong the ends of my fingers tingle it scared me so I don’t touch it anymore I only bought all these stones to get rid of this spirit but it’s getting worse I wake up constant all night long the spirits still there but now I have another problem my body feels so hot like burning from inside out what do you think it could be . You probably think I’m a crazy person

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Carol, well sounds as if you have tried to use good protective crystals already. Hematite might be a good choice as it can hide your energy from unwanted attention but you do not say this spirit is doing anything harmful so you might just want to ask what they want. I hope that you did program the crystals for protection from this spirit as that is what I would do. Please see my article on How To Program a Crystal for more detail.

Also just to add if you read this article fully you will see I do not reccomend Amethyst for sleep.

    2. Lorena

Carol try sleeping without the amethyst at night. I started heating voices when i slept with them. Keep the black tourmaline for sleep and talk to the spirit. Tell them you have no interest in associating with them and to go away. Good luck.

      1. David

Yeah I got and still get voices from my amethyst as well as very vivid dreams. For me those these are always friendly, positive and bring specific messages or guidance. I also find these only seem to occur very early morning before I awake. 5-7am. It doesn’t disturb my sleep rythym and is a very positive and pleasant experience for me to get a clear message from my guides and helpers before I awaken. I found amethyst takes a little while to “get in tune with” but once you are it gives the most amazing restorative sleep along with the ability to connect to guides.

    3. David

I would say with night time spiritual psycic attack it’s best to not simply use a single crystal. It’s best to grid the corners of your bed and/or your room.

Square shape is very protective and really creates a strong protective barrier around you.

The two stones I would recommend – and I actually like to use them together – 1 of each stone next to each other in the 4 corners – are Selenite and Black Tourmaline.

These are polar opposite crystals but work exceptionally well together in healing and shielding layouts.

Selenite like the moon which it is named after is a white “reflective” stone. It provides peace, calm and clarity by reflecting negative energies away. Its associated with the crown and soul star chakra and provides mental clarity and prevents negative thoughts and emotions while gently uplifting you. Think of it like a mini force shield.

Black tourmaline is the opposite – it’s a stone of absorption. It like a sponge which absorbs negative energies and grounds them. It operates on the root chakra and the earth star energy point below your feet.

When you use the two together you have this perfect system one reflecting negative energy – the other absorbing, collecting and grounding it so it’s no longer active. Double layer of protection.

Also it’s normal to feel shaking vibration in your hand or black tourmaline when it is absorbing a lot of excess or negative energy from your system. I would just recommend clearing it before reusing. Tourmaline loves being buried in the earth to allow the earth to absorb and clear the energy it collected.

Hi Carol, my partner doesn’t want to frighten you as she has had a similar problem to yours not to the same degree but rooms seemed not as bright like a dark shadow was present, sometimes a lot of disturbance through the night. This don’t sound like a loving spirit more like a form of curse as my partner found out herself. For her she found some advice on using a white candle average size, sit with the candle 5 or more mins as required, chanel your worries and fears into the candle like you are posting them deep into the candle.. When you feel you have spent long enough on that and also tell the candle what you want in place of the situations you are experiencing you then put the candle where it won’t be disturbed and light it please bear in mind that the candle must burn completely down and out do not blow it out beforehand or let anyone else do it, you should notice within a day or two a difference like a big weight being lifted and it should seem brighter as it did with my partner, she noticed the difference quite quickly and found peace… We hope this helps you and wish you well..

Hello, thanks for this important informations!

I found pink agate very helpful, and calming.

Quartz was over-stimulating for me, and also: amethyst, moldavite, seraphinite, pietersite…

I also want to ask you about sleep with some other crystals: blue calcite, labradorite, smokey quartz, apatite and tree agate? I am afraid of experimenting because I am too much ungrounded.

  21. Heloise

Your blog is amazing! Brilliant work!
In my bedside table I have rose quartz, howlite (the best for relaxation indeed), smoky quartz and my favorite: celestite. Not a low chakra crystal, but I find it very relaxing.
I just found your blog on pinterest today, and I’m reading everything I can before my days truly starts!
Have a nice week and thank you for all the beautiful information.

  22. Rosie

I mentioned above I have terrible sleep up at least 5 times a night and that’s when I FINALLY get to sleep! synchronistic that I came across this article today even though I have been on your blog before and LOVE it ay I add:-)..but I was literally broken up about the state of my sleep just today to my partner as it is starting to affect e physically! then saw this and realised i have an amethyst under my pillow, celestites times 2 a quartz point and selenite by my bed head and a gazillion crystals very close by to my bed on a table all out on display, charging, chilling etc haha . Even though it is subjective and depends on the person I literally took every crystal out of my room and will monitor very much like an allergy experiment if this is the cause lol adding calming crystals one by one! fingers crossed, I will keep you guys posted:-)

  23. Juliana

I do find amethyst too strong. Sometimes it does work, and it does allow me to sleep, and when it does it’s really interesting because it gives me the most amazing dreams! But when it doesn’t, I won’t be able to sleep, and I will kind of turn around in my bed, and nothing, so I always end up removing it from under my pillow and placing it on my nightstand , and then it’s alright I can sleep.

A stone that I really enjoy sleeping with is Moonstone. I usually place three small moonstones under my pillow, all different types of moonstone, and it gives me a very good quality of sleep, and also amazing dreams. But it’s not overwhelming like Amethysts are.

Another stone that won’t allow me to sleep if I have it in my room is obsidian, but it’s a high vibration stone, so I get why.

  24. Melanie Farley

Thank You very much Ethan- your explanation of how to use crystals for a good night’s sleep, was very helpful. I have a horrible time sleeping- so I’m going to give your advice a try! Thank you again!

  25. Barbara

Very Interesting I must say about Amethyst ,so i get it now i have Amethyst by my bedside and cannot or have not been sleeping well at all so yes very good to know

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Zan, it says not to STORE your crystals under the bed, like any old crystals in boxes etc. Later I say you can place a ‘crystal for sleep’ under the bed, meaning a crystal I recommend for sleep in this article. Hope that makes sense.

  26. Gina

Black tourmaline helps a lot! Whenever I sleep with it by my bedside, I never have nightmares, which were a recurring problem for me. Rose quartz isn’t really a good stone for me (at least for me) – I always have dreams about love or relationship issues whenever I sleep with it lol

  27. Jade

Hi, I am hoping you can help me. My daughter has had night terrors since she was between one and two years old. I want to get her some crystals for under her pillow. Can you recommend any? She didn’t remember anything from the night terrors even if I wake her but she gets really distressed, pointing, yelling, crying with eyes open wide but is asleep and doesn’t know who we are. All sources seem to recommend different stones..

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Jade, Sorry to hear about your daughter. Different sources will always give different advice in any field. I do not know specificly what helps best with night terrors. I have had very good results using a Smoky Citrine Crystal Point (You could try any natural Citrine point if you cant get it) for nightmares that might help. Place it flat next to the bed with the point facing away from the head. As this is a very yound child might be safer placed outside her bed on a stand. Remove the crystal in the morning and cleanse it.

    2. Cherry

      Hi Jade,

There is one crystal I know to be amazing at alleviating night terrors: Morganite. It can do it for any age group, but is especially effective for children, and it’s a very gentle heart crystal so won’t upset delicate energies.

      Love and Light.

  28. Jamie

Hi Ethan, Thank you so much for the post and I am looking into your books today! This is interesting, as I am only using my new, small Amethyst (already cleansed, charged, and purposed) to help with my lucid dreaming, dream work, etc. and not as a sleep aid. I can’t seem to find any information on crystal movement, yet I’ve heard other accounts of it. I leave it parallel to my body, tip pointing same direction as my head. One night, after waking abruptly in the middle of the night, the amethyst was in a different position with the tip pointing towards me. Do you have information on crystal movement? And you mention the tip should not point towards you, but there it was… pointing towards me. Thanks again!

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Jamie, Amethyst is a good choice for dream work and lucid dreaming. Having a crystal point pointing at your head is only an issue if you want to sleep better. It is very stimulating. For what you are doing such as Lucid Dreaming it is actually very effective. This could have been a message for you. Point it at your head to stimulate dreams and lucidity. I do plan to write about this subject soon.

  29. Christina Howard

Recently I’ve tested a theory, whether or not having my display case of various crystals, gems, and precious metals in my bedroom, in the corner of the room close to my head, actually Does have an effect on my sleep. First of all, the light inside my case will turn on by itself when I go to bed. All day long it isnt on, yet at night it turns itself on. Also when first placed in my bedroom with my collection completed, about 2 weeks went by of my nights being terror filled. Feeling someone or something heavy pressing me into the bed. My husband sleeps through anything. So finding comfort from him was out. Then I couldn’t sleep, but if I did fall asleep paralysis set in. Never had sleep paralysis before, now having it with lucid dreaming. Absolutely terrifying! Eventually I figured it out and removed some crystals and put them in storage. Things improved for me at night. Months later, last night, I decided to restore my display cabinet just to see if the contents were causing problems. As soon as my head hit the pillow, the light turned on in the cabinet, and this time my husband saw it. I had night terrors, sleep paralysis, and my husband said he slept better than ever…I needed his help all night long, trying to scream for him, reach for him, anything to wake me up…every time I went back to sleep it happened again. Over and over. This morning I removed some crystals, tonight I’m moving the display into another room. I am convinced. I now have a small understanding of the inherit power of crystals. They can be dangerous. But I love them❤

Hi, I’ve been trying to look for some crystals to put under my daughters crib/bed she’s 19 months. I want would like for her to feel safe and relaxed in her own bed. She always gets up some point in the night and comes to bed with us. I read another article that said to get 4 rose quarts , 4 amethyst and 1 moonstones. And place each rose and amethyst under the bed in each corner and the moon stone in the center. But since you said the amethyst might give lucid dreams, I’m thinking I should probably replace it with another one ? Can you recommend me another crystal that it good as well maybe protection ? And I also wanted to get her a crystal to wear I was thinking maybe the Aventurine? She’s so attached to me and I had her in a babies mygym classes and it took her a couple months to really get her comfortable to the teachers. But now she started swimming classes at 19 months and her first day of swimming went as I expected she was crying, it one on one so it’s just her and the instructor, I’m there of course watching as well as other parents and instructors but I had to step out. All she wanted to do was go with me, but he said she did fine she would listen to directions and even sing songs but she would still scream. He said she will be fine it’s just because she doesn’t know him and the environment. Do you think that crystal will help her ? Thank you !

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I am sure she will be okay. For me I would swap the Amethyst for Hematite for protection and sleep. Rose Quartz is ideal for children’s rooms and sleep. Moostone can also stimulate dreams so if you don’t want that go for something like Howlite. The Aventurine is calming, you can also use Rose Quartz.

  31. Sarah

I’m just beginning to learn about crystals so this may be a stupid question but why is it that you suggest not hanging the crystals above a bed?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Everything I list such as this is because it is over stimulating, energizing, activates upper chakras, triggers dreams and or astral travel. Generally not what you want if you want rest and relaxation. Less is more with the bedroom.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

To me Selenite is a high vibration, spiritual stone that activates the crown chakra and soul star chakra. This could be too much for some sleepers. If you find that you sleep well with it then you have nothing to worry about. It all depends on why you chose it for your bed. If you want to cleanse the days energy I personally just sweep my aura with it in the evening.

    2. David

I have a large 20kg log of selenite positioned where I sleep and I sleep like a baby 🙂 I would recommend strongly however that you also use grounding crystals to open up the root and earth star chakra points at the same time if sleeping with selenite or other high chakra crystals.

Opening higher chakras on their own causes issues. They are however very very beneficial for sleep and health and rejuvination but as with all things in life Balance is the key. If you bring lots of cleansing healing energy into high chakras you need to also ground it. When you create a balanced circuit with crystals you enter a deeply meditative state. In healing sessions when you open these two points on their own clients basically fall asleep go into meditation. You see breathing patterns almost instantly change.

    3. David

Also tell tale sign of too much selenite energy in the crown with out adequate grounding …. The soles of your feet will hurt in the morning 😉

  32. Amy

It’s so odd to me that you don’t associate vivid dreams with a good night’s sleep – I guess I’ve always had movie-like dreams my whole life so, for me, crystals that enhance those dreams are awesome. I sleep every night with three large pieces of amethyst next to my head and then I swap out other crystals on a regular basis to see what comes of them – but I always have a wonderful night’s sleep! Right now with my amethyst I have been sleeping next to Amazonite, scolecite, obsidian, apatite, moonstone and lepidolite and my dream adventures have been just super. Tonight I’m adding moldavite to the grouping so we’ll see how that turns out. I guess the rule of thumb here is – when you wake up after a night’s worth of magical dreams do you feel energized or worn out? If it’s the former, test away on all sorts of crystals – if it’s the latter use caution and read the above suggestions in the article. 🙂

  33. Jean

Hi and thank you for this post.
I recently bought a amall carnelian, which I have never been drawn to before. Actually I haven’t been particularly drawn to any crystals or stones before. I put the carnelian under my pillow and I end up holding it in my hand all night. I sleep pretty good but have very intense dreams. They are not nightmares although “bad” things like plane crashes happen. However, it feels like unresolved traumas, maybe even from past lives. Do you have any experience with carnelians?

    Thanks so much,
    Jean

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I have not had this happen to me myself but Carnelian helps heal lower chakra issues which might be related to your dreams. It is also a good stone for cutting etheric cords to people or situtaions. The question would be, do you want to do this type of work in your sleep?

  34. Catriona

    Hi!
I recently purchased a bloodstone bracelet and have been wearing it 24/7! I have been having the most vivid and crazy dreams since I’ve been wearing it! Is this the cause? Should I not have it in my bedroom at all?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

If a stone affects your sleep then that is all that matters. To test you just try not wearing it at night for a few nights and see if there is a difference. It is okay in the bedroom just keep it away from your aura while sleeping.

  35. Bryanne

Oh my! I have all my stones right next to my bed and there all the ones you’ve listed. Just need to move the amethyst away from my nightstand. I don’t own kyanite yet but I’m working on it seriously. Don’t have the extra $$ right now or I already would of ordered one lol. This list is awesome. I find myself coming back for advice often. Thanks again!

  36. Mrs June Partington-Smith

Hi, Another new crystal lover, what would I use Shungite crystal for, always feel drawn to it in the crystal store. Huge Thankyou for all of your invaluable advice which is very much appreciated. Thankyou. X

    1. Cherry

Shungite is a fantastic grounder, cleanser and protector.

But before you think to yourself, ‘Oh, I don’t need any of those things’, you may want to keep in mind that while sometimes we’re drawn to the crystals which can help us, at other times we can also be drawn to those whose energies and qualities we share.

  37. Amber Smigelski

Obsidian varies vastly in energy…I believe the bigger chunks are more grounding calming and drawing of neg energy…the smaller stones seem all over the place and not vibrationally balanced..just personal experience…I’ve only used 3 pieces of obsidian. One was huge around 10lbs one was smallish about a 2-3″ thick chunk the other was a tiny sliver of obsidian in an arrowhead. The giant chunk of obsidian was one of the most powerful grounding crystals I ever used. I was going through a really traumatic phase of my life and was experiencing nightmares every night and sleeping next to it while touching it soothed my sleep and dreams and I awoke feeling calm and significantly better. The thick little chunk didn’t have as noticeable effect but it was nice as well. I used it for grounding and pulling toxicity out of myself and others; it worked well; someone I used it on was blown away. The arrowhead felt very off; I did not at all benefit from it. Something about the huge chunk was amazing beautiful energy that really restored me. If you have to compare crystal energy to sound…the large chunk would be like a deep bassy hum or gong that is relaxing and constant…the smaller arrowhead sliver like a irritating higher pitched ping in a bucket. I think this crystal likes to stay as intact as possible; also free of sharp edges! It also needs frequent cleansing imho or it will stockpile energy. With the large crystal I took it with me into my epsom salt baths more than once a week.

  38. Mariya

Can’t sleep without my black obsidian and my smoky quartz! They re both tumbled stones and both placed under my pillow. When they’re getting cleansed i put a piece of sodalite right in front of my bed. I sleep like a baby. However every time i used rose quartz for sleeping i had horrible nightmares….:(

    1. Cherry

Rose Quartz isn’t ‘compatible’ with everybody, despite the frequent recommendations you can find just about everywhere. Also, everyone experiences different crystals in different ways: I love Tourmaline, but I don’t know many other people who can work with it. There could also be negative energy attached to your Rose Quartz which is affecting your sleep (in dreams, we are mostly far more sensitive to this kind of thing than in our waking lives).

Your Obsidian and Smoky Quartz, on the other hand, repel or absorb negative energy, and I personally feel they’re an excellent choice; I find both very calming. I have a largeish (5″ × 3″) natural Smoky Faden Quartz right by my head at night; it is enormously helpful, to the point where I sometimes wake to find it in my hand. It also has a tendency to make its way down to beside my painful pelvis (Ankylosing Spondylitis); a crystal can and will work its way to any painful area to soothe it and stop it from disrupting sleep.

  39. Star

I haven’t had any problems sleeping with an Amethyst under my pillow. But I do notice having more vivid dreams and remembering my dreams more since I started doing it.

  40. Rebecca

Hi this article is great and very helpful. I have a mix of gems by my bed and am going to be spreading them around my home instead of having them all sharing energies. I’ve often had recurring dreams throughout my life but more often than not I’ve had no memory of my dreams upon waking up (since I was a child and including before I slept near gems) but I bought a sodalite gem last year and since putting it on the bedside table, anytime I’ve not had it there I have had vivid and very strange dreams. One had 2 red spiders in (I’m terrified of them but actually touched one and there was a third smaller red one underneath it – I’ve since read they’re a sign of protection) and some more disturbing dreams. I’ve never seen any recommendation for people to have sodalite by the bed but now I’m afraid of sleeping without it. What would you recommend? Thank you.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Sodalite is a Third Eye stone so it makes sense to me that it can cause psychic or prophetic dreams. If that’s what you want then go ahead. All dream stones have the potential of giving you ‘dreams’which are distrurbing, thats the risk you take if you have them by the bed all the time…

  41. Monalisa

    Hi Ethan
I got the blue fluorite three days ago and I wore around my neck like a necklace, but since then av not been able to sleep at night… Is the gem the problem or am I going crazy

      1. Cherry.

You might also want to consider whether you and the Fluorite have bonded properly. Fluorite is a fantastic sleep stone, so I’m wondering, did you cleanse it when you got it? If not, it’s time to do that. You don’t know who handled your Fluorite before it came to you, let alone what kind of negative energy they might have passed on to it! I bought a Labradorite on Amazon at Christmas 2018; even the packaging told me two postal workers had left negative imprints on it, one who was poorly but still working and the other who’d had a big argument with their SO. Other people’s negative energy will transfer from the stone to you if you don’t get rid of it. It can also severely disrupt the bonding process.

The best method I’ve found to establish a solid bond with a new crystal is:

        1) ALWAYS cleanse fully when you bring it home.

        2) Wear or carry it while going about your day (if it’s too large, you’ll need to spend some quiet time sitting with it, just touching and handling it) until it feels as if you’ve had it for years instead of hours/days. During this time, DO NOT have any other crystals, even of the same type, on your person (metals, like a silver locket for example, don’t seem to cause a problem). You and the new crystal want to get a clear read on each other’s energies, with no other stones interfering. That’s the best way for you and it to get used to each other.

  42. Amelia

    Hi Ethan,
I find that labrodite helps me sleep the most. It has a calming and peacful effect on me. I recommend that you try it. It is rainbow in colour. It need reacharging by light of a rainbow so don’t use it too often.

    1. Cherry

Actually Labradorite loves the sunshine (I’m a crystal whisperer, so they can tell me directly what they need for me to do for them). Rainbows are good, yes; they have full colour spectrum energy… but without the restorative energy of the Sun (and the cleansing power of the rain), there wouldn’t be a rainbow to start with!

Funnily enough, I have a super-rare full spectrum Rainbow Tourmaline in my collection. It likes to charge from sunsets!

And we mustn’t ever forget the most universal restorative energy of all: Love. Yes, it works on crystals too!

  43. Lisa

Thank you for your insite one this. I was having a hard time sleeping so a few months ago I decided to try some of my stones and crystals. I chose smokies quartz, amethyst, black tourmaline, moon stone, clear quartz and my moldivite. Now I have tried other stones and changed them around but these seem to be the best ones for me personally. I sleep like a baby now.

  44. Sara

Thank you so much for this article! I had my daughter sleeping with amethyst under her pillow and she would take for ever to go to sleep and wake up multiple times a night! I read this article last night and tonight I took it from under her pillow and placed it on the other side of the room and she was asleep within 15 minutes! Again, thank you!!!

  45. Dee

I recently bought a torqouise pendant and a clear quartz to keep for protection especially at work and driving.. I carry the quartz in my wallet and my purse is near my bed( on the side). I started having very weird dreams recently. Should I keep the quartz in my car or should I remove the torquoise pendent while I sleep?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Clear Quartz can disturb some peoples sleep, you could test that by removing it from the bed area. Also any crystal worn/carried daily especially for protection needs regular and ideally daily cleansing.

  46. Debra

I Thank you for thos Information for I am one to wear a Amethyst necklace with my sisters ashs in it n have had Very wild dreams . Not knowing i took it off due to the heavyness of the charm itself was causing me to have headaches. Ive noticed now with your guidance that i have been able to rest better.

  47. Michi

With amethyst, it really depends on the person. I sleep with an amethyst crystal & it helps me sleep well. I’m not sure if it has to do with my very close connection to it, but I definitely sync with its energy in harmony. At night, it helps me fall right to sleep. I sleep like log with it, I get such restful sleep. I think it really depends on the amethyst itself and how connected you are to it. It’s also been programmed to help me calm down & be an energetic shield as well, so maybe that made the difference?

  48. Celestine

The part on amethyst is pretty true for me. I’ve slept with an amethyst pendant for close to twenty years, and have had many vivid dreams that I’ve kind of got used to it. Recently, I’ve gotten back to a small clear quartz piece that had a bit of black on it’s tip (black tourmaline?). It used to keep me up all night, but recently, it just knocked me out in an hour these days. Not sure why it got so draining.. But it was a very peaceful sleep.

  49. Sofie

Thanks for sharing. I like smokey quartz for sleep. It helps me stay grounded. But I add rose quarts to it. I have also used amethyst but will reconsider that one. Never thought it might effect my dreams since I always have vivid dreams.

  50. Jennifer Barr

I’ve just learned I need a protection stone for my bedside. Would smokey quartz be a good choice? I’ve been using it for protection during the day. I’m not sure if it’s something I would need a break from. Is it possible to overdo it?
    Thanks

  51. Efuru

I decided tonight to lay with most of my stones as I previously done before. This time I was very unsuccessful with even relaxing. I had clear quartz, okenite, critine stones, fire agate, moon stone, sun stone, rose quartz, fools gold ( iron pyrite), and etc; I must say my mind and body was going haywire. My soul could not rest literally. My cats however chose a stone and is completely in la-la land. One chose a rose quartz and the other clear quartz. Me on the other hand removed most of my stone and left the two the cats are sleeping with. My fools gold is underneath my pillow but in the neck area, my kyanite in my pocket , and tiger stone on my navel. I must say I’m getting sleepy but my cats just woke up. One playing with my foot and then jumped down to eat, the youngest followed. That was after I discovered the moonstone was still on my bed and I placed it back in the stone area. I will continue to read and work with them accordingly. It is such a great learning experience. One day I will overstand all that I can with each of my stones. Thank you so much for your article…. Wish me luck in sleeping ☺…..

    1. Cherry

Efuru, you want to be careful, especially with your Pyrite (fool’s gold) and Fire Agate.

Pyrite is actually, though this isn’t widely known, Solar in nature; Fire Agate contains fire energy. Naturally neither of these energies will help you to relax or sleep. Earth or Water energies work much better.

You have at least one clever cat: Rose Quartz is a good sleep stone, at least until it needs charging! Clear Quartz however you would need to try out for yourself: I sleep with dozens of them on my bedside table with no problem, but some people find this crystal too stimulating for sleep.

One crystal that comes to mind immediately in your case is Alexandrite. It is a remarkable stone if you can obtain it: when I wear mine, I feel as if the whole Universe is in harmony, and I can almost hear that harmony. It is *incredibly* relaxing. You might also want to try one or more colours of Tourmaline; green is good for the nerves and the physical heart (the actual organ), pink is a spectacular protector of the ’emotional heart’ (the seat of the emotions and the reason the heart chakra has two colours), blue is a rarer but very relaxing form with the energy of the sea, and black is highly protective and grounding. The lower frequency colours (orange, yellow, red if you can find it) might work for you too, but pink, green and blue are the ones I tend to find most calming, and black gives a great feeling of security.

    1. Cherry

I sleep with an Auralite 23 slice in a pouch around my neck (alongside 2 Larimars, a Blue, a Brown, a Watermelon and a Rainbow Tourmaline, and a little Sceptre Quartz). It has a very soothing energy, and yes, it’s a classic protective/grounding crystal. If you can sleep with an Amethyst and a Citrine (or an Ametrine) close by, it may be worth giving Auralite a shot. It’s powerful, but pretty gentle.

  52. Lorelei

Hi, I was gifted a large Amethyst Crystal by someone very deeply spiritual. Sleeping wasn’t a problem, in fact, since the passing of my brother 2 years before and everyday being a battle with my emotions, I infact sleep very deeply. However, sleeping with this crystal at the head of my bed the first night I had the worst nights sleep I’d experienced since before my brother died. That’s when I looked online and found your page. The next night I placed it on my window sill and had bad dreams all night. I now can’t have it in my bedroom at night, it’s energy is too strong. I carry it with me in the day though, like a comforter. I can feel it lifting my spirit.

I am researching which crystals can counter act my insomnia. I have found great success with black tourmaline for removing my nightmares but still find that my mind can wander for hours while I lay in bed.

Based on your article, rose quartz sounds like the best fit, but I once slept with it under my pillow and had terrible and weird dreams that night. I think it was trying to bring up all of my issues relating to love and was just too intense. So, I am not sure what to use instead.

How about moss agate? It is a grounding stone but not sure about other properties in relation to sleep.

  54. Abdul Moeed

The reason Amethyst makes sleep problem for few people….. My saturn is in bad position it’s in 4th house and using crystals of saturn : amethyst , lapis , black tourmaline is bad for me.
As saturn in 4th house and sun in 10th house so . Saturn will make trouble for sun

Few people whos saturn in good place they might not feel any sleep disturbance if they keep amethyst under their pillow

I am a beginner in crystals. I wanted my young son to sleep better and placed a raw rose quartz (about the size of a ping pong ball) under his bed and he had horrible nightmares that night!! any thoughts on this? I thought maybe it was a cleanse and release this first night?
    I really am bummed out.
I also got him a small polish smoky quartz to wear in his pocket to school because he has such dreaded thoughts about the future. He’s only 7 years old. I figure he must be an old soul if having these thoughts at this young age.
    Please help

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

It is rare I hear of this. As I say above I recommend polished stones for the bedroom. I am also assuming you cleansed the crystal before placing it there. The only way to be sure if the crystal caused the nightmare is to remove it and try again another time.

I know this is an old post but I just had to mention that as someone who has always suffered from night mares, vivid dream and unwanted lucid dreams, I finally found a crystal hat helps me have restorative sleep and almost no dream recall! The only problem is I have been sleeping with 5 bracelets and don’t know which is the one helping. After reading your post I’m covinced it the Howlite, but I also have a Lava stone, Indian Agate, and Beryl. Either way I’m very relived that I can have restorative sleep again. I also wanted to mention howeverthat although it’s working beautifully, I have to be wearing them, not just keep them close to the bed or pillow.

    1. Cherry

It could well be the Howlite. I’d suggest that the problem one is most likely your Beryl bracelet, depending on which Beryl it is (Emerald, Aquamarine, Morganite – though this is unlikely as it is a superb anti-nightmare gem – Heliodor, Goshenite, Pezzatoite, Bixbite, and the newly discovered Beryllonite). I love Aquamarine, and I have half a dozen of them on my bedside table, but wearing it overnight gives me some very disturbing dreams, as can my two Emeralds on occasion; but my Heliodors are essential companions. I don’t have the final three – they’re rare and expensive – but Goshenite is a purifier, of which I only have three tiny tumblestones but would dearly love to have a larger one; its energy is as pure as Danburite, if not purer. Your lava stone and Agate bracelets should provide grounding and protection, so I doubt they’re the problem, especially the Agate as that stone’s energy is in the lower vibration range, and it tends to calm its wearer down to its energy level, making sleep easier.

I just started to get into crystals and I started a mini collection but had no idea where to put them. I put howlite under my husbands pillow and he has been sleeping very very well last 2 nights! I didn’t tell him. I was keeping way to many crystals next to my bed and I was waking up at 2-3 every night. Now I put my rose quartz next to my bed and my hermatite on the dresser next to it. The rest I’m keeping on the far side of the room. I’m bringing my onyx to my work desk. I can’t wait to get selenite for my living room and I’ve heard also under your bed at the foot of it? I tried sleeping with rose quartz under my pillow and it was ok but I felt like I had old relationship dreams so I think I’ll keep by the nightstand instead. I’ve heard good sleep things about lepidolite?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Thanks for sharing this. I personally do not recommend Selenite near or under the bed as it is very high vibe and can cause lots of dreams. Lepidolite is also an upper chakra crystal like Amethyst. Again, you can just test these out, they may work for you.

  58. Scott Marcom

I had a 10 inch long think Selenite wand in my room about 12 ft from my bed in a upper loft and I definitely could not fall asleep with that! I love it for clearing the aura but it has to be in another room. I am very sensitive sleeper (sounds, what I eat, emotions, energies around me). I had a Vedic Astrological 9 gem armlet bangle set in silver (emerald, ruby, yellow and blue sapphire, large white zircon, pearl, red coral, hessonite garnet, and Cat’s eye) These were all small but very powerful and I couldn’t even sleep with it in my room well. I do where a 3.6 carot yellow sapphire (this has helped me sleep), 11 carat pearl on a necklace and a gold, copper, and silver bangle armlet.
A psychic recommenced a green jade for releasing the day’s energies and that has helped.
What is the best stone for under the pillow for one who is very psychically sensitive and needs grounding but not dulling? A stone for deep restful, dreamless sleep (the sleep that is the most refreshing). A howlite?
    AUM
    Scott

    1. Cherry

Scott, you could try Fluorite, Black or Brown Tourmaline, or Smoky Quartz. These should ground you – whenever I hold my Brown Tourmaline, I feel deeply grounded but am still able to astrally travel – but not blunt your edge. If you feel drawn to Howlite, then by all means give it a try, because most of the time we sensitives are drawn to the crystals which can help us best.

  59. John Barrientes

I had a selenite sphere, pyramid, towers and wand and amethyst (raw), and obsidian all working for the same intention. That was a very powerful. I had to thin out the energy. I shared the energy with my window sills backdoor and front door. All this was more than l needed in one room.(bedroom). Now I am at such ease, and feel the whole house is protected, now I sleep heavenly. BE BLESSED.

  60. Clare

Interesting read and all the comments too…
For me, I have anxiety and worry going on at the moment and amethyst is my go to crystal for a lot of things so I just chucked one of my rough chunks (maybe 2inches big) under my pillow to see if it helped! Happy to say my restless sleep has now turned back in to my usual deep sleep but I guess it really depends on you, I wear amethyst a lot and always have so maybe you get used to it??
I’ll take it away when I’m feeling a bit more settled as I don’t usually have a sleep issue but will also keep the others in mind for more gentle help in the future. I also have my rose quartz stones on my bedside table but the rest are across the room and away from my bed although I live in a studio so can’t really get that far away from them! 😉

    1. Kat

I always had my crystals that were blue or purple as well as selenite and howlite night to the bed and all along my headboard, and I can tell you it’s a lot of amethyst haha, and I’m fairly sure the amethyst and selenite have been especially helpful to my sleep and vivid dreams have been wonderful for me. This site is the first place I’ve ever seen anyone say to use really energizing red crystal Jasper and things like that near the bed, or that high vibration crystals weren’t relaxing! A ton of people say fluorite, kunzite, selenite, and especially amethyst, are their go-to sleep aids, and high vibration stones like celestite and kunzite have always been indispensable for me personally to relax into sleep.

This has been an interesting and unique concept and bunch of experiences for me to read as well! Ive always kept red root/base, sacral, and most yellow and orange or solar plexus stones on the other side of the room, a complete flip of this almost! It’s very interesting. I have a shelf full of Hall, Eason, Simmons, Frazier etc. books I’ve collected where I looked up my collection, and they don’t all agree, but I’ve found my way down the middle of the advice from a lot of authors. I might remove some and see how it is afterward now. I say anything is worth a try.

  61. Brent

I wish you explained why we shouldnt have certain crutslas and arrangements in bedrooms. I get theres reasons for it and I’d like to know why. I have a bloodstone and smokey quarts necklance I made and I hang them on my wall above my headboard to the right of my bed and have and a moonstone under my cats bed right next to mine

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

I have explained why certain types of crystals do not have energy that is conductive to sleep in the article and in even more detail in the questions in the comments section below.

  62. Jenn

It was suggested once that I put black obsidian in my pillow to act as a dream catcher. I was having immensely vivid night terrors, and the well trusted shop owner that I confided in is not sure why I had a drastic reaction to the stone. I removed the stone from my pillow within 2 weeks as I had completely stopped dreaming all together. It took years for me to dream again and it is rare now that I dream like I used to. I refuse to touch the stone, though I do still have it. It’s in storage, either by itself or with a clear quartz, I don’t recall exactly. If I have to guess, I’d say this was about 8 years ago and I am still not back to my normal, though night terrors are mostly still gone and none like what I was having. (There is one that is recurring that I haven’t figured out how to handle)
Is there a way to counter the loss of dreams? Does anybody have any ideas on why the stone shut down far more for me than just bad dreams?

    1. Kat

Black obsidian is a very healing stone but I’ve often been told it’s a harsh and brutally honest healer, and that it may cause things like this if you don’t build your experience with it gradually through meditation. I don’t know if that’s what you experienced, but if you want to use obsidian, I’ve read rainbow and mahogany obsidian are much more gentle stones than the black variety. In time you might have better experiences but it’s like jumping into a very cold pool vs. easing your way in to put black obsidian in a peaceful environment and use it all night so quickly. 🙂

      1. Cherry

Absolutely right, Kat. Black Obsidian has the power to reveal deep truths about its user; normally it also comforts and helps said user to accept those truths, but it will go to some lengths to send its message home, including altering their dreams. It’s a physiological fact that everyone dreams; perhaps Jenn’s dreams are so unpleasant that she’s simply blocking them out and not recalling them. Strong Opiate painkillers can have a similar effect.

There is a further possibility: despite what some authors on the subject will have you believe, not every person is compatible with every crystal. I myself can work with a huge (and apparently widening) variety, but I’ve never been able to work with Turquoise; any time I wear or carry it, I experience very bad luck, to the point of the brakes on my father’s car failing and almost sending it, with myself and him in it, off a cliff! I can also only work with a small number of Jaspers, and I find Lava Stones repellent. Sometimes it’s a simple matter of the the time not yet being right; at others, it’s a straightforward incompatibility between the user’s fundamental energies and the crystal’s, rather like how some people simply can’t get along with one another, no matter how hard they try. Unfortunately, there’s no simple way to determine which crystals you are or aren’t compatible with; working that out is just another part of your crystal journey.

    2. Cherry

      Hi Jenn,

I have a sneaking suspicion that you and Black Obsidian might not be compatible. A lot of authors – though I haven’t seen this from Ethan, and that fact pleases me tremendously – lead their readership to believe that any crystal you pick up, will respond positively to your personal, fundamental energies: it simply isn’t true! Every crystal user will encounter one or two to multiple kinds of crystal that they just cannot work with. (Mine are Turquoise, and most of the Jaspers; both are lauded as superb healers, but Turquoise always brings me terrible luck and most of the Jaspers just repel me.)

As for your dream problem, the human brain isn’t set up to not dream: experimental suppression of REM sleep via pharmaceuticals has driven the subjects to – hopefully temporary – madness. I feel that because of Obsidian’s nature as – as Kat so rightly put it – a brutally honest healer (it reveals deep and sometimes very uncomfortable truths about its user, and it doesn’t stint to make sure the message gets across, though usually it will provide some comfort in the face of what it shows), and what seems to me to be a base level incompatibility, you should at the minimum remove the Obsidian from your bedroom. I would also recommend that you cleanse it very thoroughly, because there is also the possibility of it having picked up some bad energies; these can severely affect the natural sleep cycles of anyone who’s sensitive to crystal energy. Once fully cleansed, you might wish to move the stone on; or you could try again, as Kat also rightly suggests, to *slowly* work with it and see if your results are better after it’s cleansed.

As for restoring your dreams, once you’ve cleared the Obsidian one way or another, you can try:
      • Fluorite (gentle, calm mind-based* energy; for this purpose, I’d recommend cubes over octahedra

      • Iolite (beautiful, gentle mind-based energy which is usually very soothing)

•Ocean Jasper (exceptionally nurturing; this is one of the few Jaspers I can work with, and its calm, nurturing vibrations always give me a good night)

      • Lapis Lazuli (protective, mind-based, useful for calling on higher beings i.e. Angels for nocturnal protection)

•Labradorite (powerfully psychic, I would only call on this if all else fails)

      * = by “Mind-based”, I mean, more spiritual than bodily, though each of these stones also has physical healing capabilities.

  63. Taly Foox

Hi, Ethan, I actually have a number of crystals on my bed around my head, they are a small rutilated quartz point, 2 lapis tumbleds, myvery special lapiz (blue) angel, which helps with sleep, headaches and calming down when I’m upset. Clear quartz – a large point with small and smaller crystals growng out of it, ellestial quartz which helps me sleep well too, lemurian quartz and a small amehyist cluster. The amethyst I actually hold it sometimes when I sleep, it helps with headaches really well. And sleep. And of course my blue lace agate wand under my pillow. So a jumble. But they all seem to help and work each in their own way. And I love them all.

    1. Kat

Blue lace agate is a favorite of mine to wear around my neck to help me sleep, not just under the pillow, yeah. It’s a new concept, all of this, for me. I agree with your experience in a lot of ways. But, I suppose it makes sense. Every person is different when it comes to reacting to sleeping pills, so who can say how one will react to sleeping next to stones until they do some trial and error?

      1. Cherry

Kat, you sound as if you’ve worked with crystals in a past life! That process of trial and error is a part of the journey for anyone who embarks on working with crystals.

Blue Lace Agate is a lovely crystal, with probably the softest energy of any agate. It teams beautifully with Angelite, Petalite and/or Celestite when you wish to speak to or call upon the help of higher beings like Angels; the other crystals assist in contact and connection, but it’s Blue Lace Agate that aids with actually communicating with them! This crystal always makes me feel like I’m floating on a summer cloud, and yes, I keep a couple on my bedside table!

Thank you for writing this article.

I recently bought some black tourmaline tumble stones for my mother in law. I hadn’t cleansed them, and while they were still in my possession, I had a strange dream that those stones were being snatched away from me by someone (I don’t know the person). Would you have an idea what this could mean? And why I had a rather stressful dream when tthe tourmaline stones are supposed to help with sleep? Thank you again.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

You shouldn’t really be using crystals that have not been cleansed, it is even worse when they are new and contain energies from other people and could explain why you had a bad dream.

      1. Nikki

I see. Thank you for replying. I now ask the shops I buy my crystals from to cleanse them, and they do it with a singing bowl. I recently got a black tourmaline and a small selenite slab for myself (cleansed) and the stones felt right this time. Thank you.

  65. Geet

I used to have sleepless nights then one month back I bought rose quartz. Since then I started having such a deep and nice sleep. For me it really works. I am grateful.

  66. Ann

Not to scare anyone but I bought a 7 by 7 inch Amethyst geode with 4 big natural prismatic crystal on top. And put it by my bedside slightly above my head last night. And I had the worst dream that night in my life and Ive had some bad dreams aka night terrors at a teenage kid. I usually have very real vivid dreams. I ended up in a very trance like state waking up asking the 5 Archangels by Name…some Ive never even called upon before in my waking State and Yeshua. Please do not put a big raw geode Amethyst anywhere near your bed. Thats why Im on this website now.

Oh my goodness! Incredible article dude! Many thanks, However I am going through difficulties
with your RSS. I don’t understand the reason why I cannot subscribe to it.
Is there anyone else having the same RSS problems? Anyone that knows the solution will you kindly respond?
    Thanks!!

This is exactly the info I needed. I’m just barely starting to learn anything about crystals and it was recommended that I meditate with a fire quartz. I have had it on my nightstand for the last two nights and have had insane dreams – all about stones – for the past two nights. I went searching for info this morning and found this post. Thank you!

  69. Morag Morris

Hi, has anyone else had a bad reaction to selenite? I read that it was great to help with sleep but I felt really bad when I tried it especially in my head, it wasn’t till I removed it from my bedroom that I felt better, the whole atmosphere in the room felt lighter.

  70. Nicole

I was wondering if there are certain crystals that cause hallucinations? Lately I have been waking up every night to a moving black mist in my room. Also another night i saw a white thin arm stretching across the room to have a hand reach out when it gets near my bed. This has been happening since my box of stones has been near my bed. It has a large variety of stones.
    Thank you

  71. Tylin Yardas

You said not to use crown or third eye chakra crystals but i personal find that lumurian helps me with nightmares and getting back to sleep after them.

  72. Amelia

Hi Ethan. Thank you for this article.I don’t have problem sleeping but I dream a lot with lots of people all the time. I don’t really recall the dreams just that I am always with people. I deal with the public daily so when I get home and on the weekends I just want to be by myself to decompress so it bothers me that I constantly dream with groups of people. I recently read about Celestite to promote restful sleep.

This is a quote: “It is the ideal crystal to place in your bedroom to bring tranquility and encourages a restful sleep.” I Just ordered two clusters and was really looking forward to using them. Now I am not too sure.

What about Shungite? I have a pretty big Pyramid by my nightstand/cabinet next to my bed. Why not Pyramids.
Should I try Rose quartz instead?. Thank you in advance.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

This is just my advice and experiences for seletcting crystals for sleep, your experience and that of otherteachers may be different. I wrote this because I have not found the usual crystals to be that helpful and to even have the opposite effect. Shungite is okay but pyramids are energisers, they amplify.

  73. Desiree

Hi, I’m new to using crystals and have a question. While I believe in the healing power of crystals, and keep them with me all day, my partner doesn’t believe in all this. But I do want the healing power of the crystals to reach him too – he is going through a lot of emotional turmoil at the moment and I would like the crystals to help get rid of his negative energies. How do I do that without his knowledge or active participation?

Is it advisable to keep the crystal/s under his mattress or bed where he can’t see it? Will it still be effective?

    Thanks

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Most people do not recommend you use crystals on someone without their knowledge. Saying that if crystals are in the home or under the bed these will of course effect everyone to some degree. It may not be as effective though. It is your choice.

    2. Cherry

@Desiree, I strongly advise you do not use crystals on your partner without his knowledge. You’re trying to help him, yes, and I know your intentions are pure; but what you are doing, especially as you mention that you’re a newcomer to crystal energies, may not be in his highest good. If you combine the wrong crystals, particularly without knowing whether or not he and said crystals are compatible, you could cause a lot of unintended trouble.

It is possible that your partner isn’t sensitive to crystals. Not everyone is. He might be at the wrong stage of his soul’s evolution. It might also be that, in time, he will awaken to crystal energy: when I first met my husband, he was not merely insensitive — he was an out-and-out sceptic! That negative attitude didn’t help my own journey one bit, but I was gradually able to awaken him to at least a few crystals. I gave him a Rose Quartz pendant for his 21st birthday (all the way back in 1995); he loves it to bits, and he hasn’t taken it off since unless forced to (by necessary surgery). Last year I got my first Golden Healer Quartz and Red Jade stones, and he loves both of them too. Hubby’s getting there: be patient, and don’t give up hope, because though it might take some time, your partner can get there too!

  74. Debbie

    Hi Ethan,
Can you tell me if a small Lithium Quartz Crystal point and a Lepidolite slab is ok to have by my bedside and ok to keep there while I sleep?
    Thank you
    Debbie

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Well, if you know which chakra/s is associated with this crystal you will find the answer above. This is always a personal thing and your experience with the crystal is always the most important factor. You can easily test its effect on your sleep too.

  75. Bobbie

Hi. Im getting into crystals now. Im also into essential oils etc ive been into the occult side of life for ab 15 yrs off and learning. I wear a black obsidian and a labradorite crystal bracelets to bed. My sleep has gotten better. Not100 but way better. Still learning though.

  76. Elizabeth

I’m ordering your book, can’t wait!
How big do the crystals have to be for them to be effective?
I am planning on buying all the crystals listed above.

    Hello Ethan,

How about agates? I have active young boys who can’t fall asleep, or often woke up screaming in the middle of the night.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Most Agates are not usually a problem but it depends on the type, element, colour and chakra associations as explained above. Fire Agate, for example, would be overstimulating in my opinion.

  78. Tim Halls

Thank you for this article, great read and makes sense I’ve been enjoying some restful sleeps with some pink howlite and fluorite, i have some rose quartz and mica on my window and Chrysanthemum Stone in one corner. I certainly had some different types near my head and bed side that I realised were not required here once i read this article. Thank you ✌ Namaste

  79. Lauren

So happy you touched on amethyst. Wore my new amethyst necklace 2 nights in a row and have barely gotten any sleep. Hearing noises, feeling spirit present, I can go to sleep but wake up at 3 am. Going to cleanse it and keep it in another room at night!

  80. Javier Triana

I am manic bipolar and given the description on some of the stones I wonder if perhaps thats why i do benefit from them. Amethyst is a stone i sleep very well with. Moonstone is another one where should i place it near me i crash out quick. Do mental disorders or imbalances perhaps also play a minor role in how the stones affect sleep patterns????

  81. Lori Fox

I sleep with an Amazonite heart under my pillow and sometimes I hold an Amazonite palm stone in my hand as well. I also keep Labradorite, ocean jasper, pink opal, rose quartz, and green calcite on my nightstand and they also seem to help me sleep.

    1. Cherry

That’s a nice mixture Lori. Almost all of these are heart related, aside from the Labradorite and perhaps the Ocean Jasper (depends largely on the colour; mine is definitely a heart stone because it’s completely green, but Ocean Jasper does come in quite a few colours). I personally find Amazonite too stimulating to sleep with, especially those stones which are predominantly green, and I don’t have pink opal or green calcite, but I do use Emerald, most kinds of Tourmaline most kinds of Quartz, and Fluorite. There are others too, but those are to do with my personal elemental associations, and probably wouldn’t be suitable for many other people.

      Love and Light.

P.S. Have you tried Galaxyite? It’s wonderful stuff!

  82. Eulalia Miller

    Hi Ethan,

For protection I have placed one selenite wand in each of the four corners of my home, one of which is my bedroom. The selenite wand is about two and a half feet from my bed. Can I keep it there or should I move it to another place in the bedroom?

  83. Clarice

I found this article incredibly useful. Thank you.
I keep my bracelets and tumblestones in a selenite bowl on my bedside table.
Is this a good placement? Or should I move it elsewhere?
I also have a selenite stick in my drawer. I suppose it’s pointed towards me due to length and only way of placement within draw. Is this something I should move too?
    Thank you for your time.

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Clarice, to me Selenite is a high vibration stone and linked to the crown chakra so not something I would want close to my bed. Also a mix of different stones sitting in the bowl is also not conductive to sleep. Wands usually have a pointed end and a receptive end, so only one end is pointing. If it is the same both ends then yes I would not keep it stored right next to the head of my bed.

  84. Vibrating Life

Great post. I would like to know if I am wearing a number of crystal bracelets, can I remove them during bedtime and place them somewhere else away from bed, only wearing those supporting sleep and again wearing the removed ones in the morning? Do I need to cleanse them every morning?

  85. JMFS

I very much enjoy Amethyst on my nightstand and keep a 1 lb cluster there. I also wear a decorative piece of amethyst on my right ring finger 24-7.

I Love dreaming, even nightmares are welcome (though I’ve only had a handful in my 47 years), so perhaps that’s why. Dreams to me are fun and often quite bizarre or even ridiculous. They’re like an autopilot adventure. In my waking moments I always have to be doing something, sitting still is not an option – I’m horrible to watch movies with as I’m up and down from my seat (forget going to a theatre). As I type this I am realizing I may not have an “off” switch at all as dreams would be a continuation of that perpetual energy! Interesting.

  86. Alicia

I’ve slept with my amethyst for years and I actually couldn’t sleep with out it sometimes. I think it depends on the person and what they “need”. 🙂 it’s important to try and see which crystals you connect with because everyone is different and what may help me might not help another. 🙂 love all the info

  87. Amber

I have picasso jasper that is always under my pillow, it works amazingly well at helping me fall asleep and if i do wake up throughout the night i find it to be only briefly before i am relaxed into sleep again

  88. sarah

I have a 10lb large amazonite semi-smokey quartz that I’ve had 2-3ft away from the bed on a tall nightstand, so above my head(my bed is very low). I haven’t slept all year. I just moved it because I forgot about it, so I will report back if it helps.
In the mean time what do you think of it being the culprit?

    1. Cherry

      Hi Sarah,

I’m a little puzzled as to what you mean by ‘Amazonite Semi-Smoky Quartz’ — is this a combination of both crystals? If so, then moving it would probably be a good call. I find Amazonite tricky to sleep with (I think it’s the warrior/confidence energy it gives me that keeps me awake), and some people find Smoky Quartz too intense (personally, I love it, but that’s because all my Smokies are special, they’re either Record Keepers, Lemurian Seeds, double terminated, or in the case of my largest Smoky, a very helpful Faden) to sleep around. It occurs to me that the combination of the two, could very well be a recipe for insomnia.

      Love and Light.

  89. Cherry

    Hi Ethan,

Good article. One thing I can recommend for good natural sleep – and I’ve been working with crystals for 33 years and counting – is a Rutilated Quartz. It likes the sunlight, so not a great idea for under the pillow (especially if like me you get forgetful), but it does help.

I also find a recent acquisition, Red Jade, very helpful. It’s the Warrior Stone, and as it sometimes says to me (I’m a crystal whisperer too), “A good warrior knows when (s)he needs to rest.”

    Love and Light.

    Hey!
i’m quite new to crystals and still leaning about the dos and don’ts. Yesterday i purchased 11 crystals. One of them was a smaller selenite so i could cleanse my other crystals. i usually have a really good sleep but last nights was one of the worst sleeps i’ve had including nightmares and seeing shadows. is it because i have so many above my head? i have a smooth amethyst as well which i’ve been reading isn’t the best for sleep. i will list all the crystals i bought and can you pleases tell me what i should do 🙂
    – tumbled amethyst
    – clear quartz point
    -tumbled clear quartz
    -orange calcite (raw)

I thought I was going mad! I was sleeping with an amethyst stone next to me for 2 days. I had the worst broken sleep and nightmares! The first night I had a dream and the next day discussed it with my uncle and I realised I had connected with his dream and something on his mind I never knew about. Then I dreamt a really bad nightmare and woke up sensing something next to my bed. Then on the second night I had the strangest dream involving being in a room with strangers coming in performing treatments on me and my partner- almost like alien abduction. We had to look through this machine, it almost was like testing our eyes and flashed something in our eye, I woke up in the night and my dog was acting very weird. Can someone explain more about all this to me please as I am new to crystals. I did cleanse them all with sage before. We had a rose quarts on one side of the bed, next to my boyfriend (who isn’t having nightmares but vivid dreams), the amethyst next to me and another black stone which I don’t know the name of creating a triangle around us. Outside the room I have many other crystals. Please help if you can! Am I bringing in a negative entity?

I have a bracelet with multiple hematites and with each one of the following gems red jasper, citrine, clear quartz, lapiz lazuli, amethyst and tiger eye. I bought it as a lucky charm and wear it even in my sleep my problem sometimes I’m having nightmares but even before i got this bracelet I’ve been experiencing it. Do you suggest I don’t use it in my sleep?

    1. Cherry

      Hi Marc,

If you were experiencing bad dreams before you got the bracelet, then it probably isn’t the culprit. I suggest you try sleeping without it, and if the nightmares persist anyway, reintroduce it, write down your dreams if at all possible, and try to think them through. It may be that something else is causing this problem, and a quick Google on the key points of the dreams can be very enlightening.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.

      Love and Light.

    Hello,
I purchased a fire agate stone and placed it next to my bed on the night stand. I am exhausted but haven’t been able to fall asleep, I feel energized. It’s a weird feeling. I’m thinking it’s the stone so after reading your article I moved it to the bathroom. Do you think pairing my fire agate and lepidolite will help balance the energy during the day?

    Thank you!
    Mayra

I sleep with the purple agate crystal under my pillow. If it is a certain moon outside I will have vivid dreams but other than that I can’t sleep without it. It stops my mind from thinking at night it will relax me. My mind will be flooded with thought 1 min then all of a sudden it just gets quiet. I love my purple agate.

  95. Estela

Hello. I have moved out citrine and pointy stones from bedrooms. It seems to have improved our sleep. I have a small palm pink tourmaline stone and a mini pink tourmaline tower (for the bookshelf) intended for my 21 year old daughter, so she can sleep better and feel refreshed and positive the morning after. Is this a good supplementary stone to rose quartz or black tourmaline? Thank you.

      1. Cherry

Rubellite is a powerful crystal, protective, grounding and reassuring to have around; but Pink Tourmaline, while still unquestionably potent, is far gentler. It does pair wonderfully with Rose Quartz, I’ve found, but this pairing seems more useful for protecting the heart chakra and emotions from wounds. It may still be worth a try, though, because in combination, they do emit a lovely soothing energy. Ultimately, however, only the person who’ll be using the crystals will be able to accurately judge this for themselves.

        Love and Light.

This is great information. Thank you!
I just got a selenite lamp & put it on the nightstand next to my side of the bed. I slept better last night than I’ve slept in a long time, & I woke up on my own, feeling full of energy!
My husband has lots of pain & nerve issues. He also has tremors, which means that he really never sleeps well.
Do you have a suggestion for him, especially concerning the nerve pains?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

      1. Cherry

@Pat: but perhaps I can help out.

I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, which involves many of the same problems as your husband is having. However, before I proceed, I must stress that I am not medically qualified, and nor should my advice be taken as a substitute for that of a trained medical professional.

That said, I can tell you from personal experience that Smoky Quartz and Tiger’s Eye, seperately or together, are good for a man with long-term pain problems. If he has joint pains, then look for a special type of Quartz called a Faden Quartz – these often come in smoky form – as it’s enormously useful for joint and bone pains. A Faden Quartz is one that has broken in two during its growth, but has healed the break in much the same way as our own bones do to become whole again; the “Faden” (German for thread) is the visible evidence of the healed injury, just as it’s visible on X-rays or an MRI scan if a bone has previously been broken.

For neuropathic (nerve) pain/spasms, I employ Tourmaline, which not only has considerable power over the nervous system but also can be tailored, either to your husband’s preferences or to the colour associated with the chakra that controls the problem area. For example, my cervical vertebrae are absolute murder; Blue Tourmaline (AKA Indicolite) is wonderful for keeping them from bothering me. For my low back and pelvis, Black Tourmaline is unbeatable. Rose Quartz is a good go-to for pain too, but not all men get along with it: my husband loves the stuff but his father can’t stand it.

        Hope that helps.

        Love and Light.

  97. Liz

Thank you Ethan for this useful article! I recently got a black tourmaline to place under the pillow, because I am a Reflector in human design and am recommended to maintain my individual aura and minimize influence from my partner while sleeping.
Not sure if it’s all the tourmaline, but those few days I’ve slept so deeply that sometimes I had stressful or really lively dreams, sometimes I can’t remember them, and sometimes I can’t get up at my usual time. I slept so deeply that it felt bothersome, ha.
I’m curious what the black tourmaline’s process is in absorbing and processing the energetic field, if it might have been fed too much, etc. Fascinating how complex they may be.

  98. Pat

    Thank you so much, Cherry!
I’ve not heard of Faden Quartz, but that makes perfect sense for bone issues!
I am drawn to tourmaline – maybe my “gut” is telling me that that’s what he needs & I never realized it.
    Much appreciated!

    1. Cherry

You’re most welcome Pat. If there’s a lesson to be taken from this Pandemic, it’s that we should be doing more to help one another in whatever ways we can. When I read your post, I identified immediately with your husband’s pain and nerve problems; with a little luck, the same things that help me, will help him.

Your gut instincts have definitely been spot on in pushing you towards Tourmaline for your husband! Something else it might help to know: with any crystal species, the more colours it comes in, the wider the range of healing energies it has to offer. Tourmaline comes in over a dozen different colours or combinations, so by that token it is extremely useful stuff! The other major families would be Corundum, Calcite, Beryl/Chrysoberyl, Topaz, and Quartz. Watch out for the Beryls, though: not everyone can ‘get along with’ them easily.

If you need any more help, I’m subscribed to this topic, so please just shout. Not to tread on Ethan’s toes, of course, but it appears that I know more about crystals for physical healing than he does.

Hello Cherry, I’m really interested in your reply here. I have scoliosis and suffer with aches and pains in my right shoulder/shoulder blade area and lower back pain on the left .. I also get pain in my hips and knees now I’m getting older. I saw your reply about faden quartz and blue tourmaline . I wondered if they would help me and if so how do you use them for pain? I love stones and all natural things but I’m not sure how I use them in this way. You say you have a blue tourmaline that helps your pain not bother you .. what do you do? I am often drawn to stones that are blue or green. I love labradorite and moonstones. I just interested to know what you do. I’ve been getting more pain the last couple of years and don’t want to resort to a life spent on painkillers if possible. I’d be very grateful for any advice
        Many thanks Zoe

        1. Cherry

          Hi Zoe,

Sorry to hear about your Scoliosis. Nasty stuff.

The best way I’ve found to get help from these crystals on a constant basis, is to wear them. I have a lovely little cabochon cut Blue Tourmaline pendant; which I keep on a 16″ chain. I also have a tiny ink-blue raw crystal (approx 4mm tall) which resides in a pouch around my neck unless it’s charging or getting some light. My Smoky Faden is too big to wear, at approx 5″×3″×1.5″, but it resides on my bedside table, and if I happen to fall asleep holding it, I’ll often wake some hours later to find it nestled against my hip or lumbar region. I also frequently keep it beside me during the day (I know you’ll realise, I’m not exactly active). As a matter of fact, this morning I’ve been in a lot of low back/pelvic pain (my SI joint is threatening to go out again, I think), which even Morphine hasn’t been that helpful with — and believe me, I completely understand your desire to avoid spending the rest of your days guzzling analgesics; I’ve been doing that for 11 years now, 8 of them on Morphine, and there is no going back, because my AS was repeatedly misdiagnosed and has had a lot of time to do damage.

However, I’ve just put my Faden beside my pelvis, and almost right away I’ve begun feeling and hearing clicks from my lumbar spine, similar to relocation clicks. The pain has now (in the last 20 minutes) come down into the range where the Morphine can silence it. Much better!

Scoliosis being what it is, however, what crystal(s) you’ll want to use will depend on where the pain is. You mention pain in your shoulders (something else I’m too familiar with, half the time mine feel ready to separate): Blue Tourmaline is good for this, because it probably stems from curvature in your neck vertebrae and associated nerve issues, but you might want to add in a Green, Pink or Watermelon Tourmaline. Working on the heart chakra, Green Tourmaline is my go-to when my heart begins to palpitate from the pain (it has powers with regard to the nerves in the heart, and is marvellously soothing); Pink Tourmaline is comforting when pain pushes us into a negative emotional pattern (and paired with Rose Quartz it can also shield the heart chakra from negative energy, like you’d get from the kind of people who are ignorant of the fact that some disabilities aren’t easily visible, or those who think they’re being sympathetic when they say “Oh, my granny had Arthritis so I know what it’s like ).

I can also recommend Petalite if you have issues with your neck or upper back: I’ve found this lovely Feldspar (which of course means it’s related to Labradorite) more than useful: in April last year I sort of half-dislocated one of my neck vertebrae (or something of that sort); my doctor’s surgery was closed and the hospitals were full of Covid, so I put on my Petalite pendant and, ten minutes later, it had guided me to roll my head in the exact right way to correct the problem. It may not have been an actual dislocation, but the pain, the click when it came right, and the way I had to roll my head, all say it was something similar.

Interesting you mention Labradorite. That is one amazing crystal for lumbar pain, so you’re on the right track. If you have low back pain (and if like me your monthly cycle is also painful and makes matters worse) then combining Labradorite and Lapis Lazuli with Carnelian and/or Amber, is brilliant.

Some other crystals you may find helpful, are Apatite, Calcite and Fluorite. All three of these have close relationships to our bones and joints. Apatite is a cousin to Tourmaline, and comes in an enormous variety of colours, some readily available, some rare and expensive; the key colours here are green, blue and Paraiba (blue-green like an Aquamarine). Of these, only the Paraiba is uncommon. Apart from being close to Tourmaline, Apatite is also a very close chemical match for an important component of our bones and teeth: hydroxyapatite. Calcite of course is a calcium mineral, as is Fluorite; both are helpful for maintenance of bones. If fatigue visits you as frequently as it does me, there is a crystal which can help: Red Jade, which is a stone packed full of life force energy. I got my first one back in October: I’ve never looked back, except to wish I’d found it sooner.

Apart from that, the only other advice I can give you is, pick the crystals you feel drawn to – your body is very much capable of telling you what it needs – cleanse and program them (Ethan’s instructions and recommendations are very good indeed), keep them beside you as much as you can (preferably within a metre of your physical body) or wear them, preferably around your neck because then they’re close to your spine, and let them work their magic.

But, one last thing: please do remember that crystals have limits to their powers, and the best approach is a combination of professional medical help, and crystal power.

Sending you Love, Light and Healing,

          Cherry.

          1. Zoe Edwards

Oh Cherry – I’m so grateful for your detailed reply. I had to wipe a few tears away reading it. I’ve had pain since my early twenties but my body was more flexible and a combination of alexander technique, pilates and yoga for scoliosis kept me in better shape. I’m 51 now and fighting a whole host of menopause symptoms and seem to get a lot of joint pain now in hips and knees to add to all the pain in my back. I really feel for you with your constant struggle.
It’s interesting what you say about disabilities not being obvious – I tried to hide mine all my life and desperately wanted to be seen as ‘normal. The curve of my spine and the resulting differences in my body was something I sought to hide every day – now when I’m in pain and can’t stand straight or walking properly due to the pain in my hips I can no longer hide it – and that has brought it’s own sadness. The changes in my mobility are quite shocking to me and a long winter in a cold house doesn’t help. I’m trying to find ways to heal physically and emotionally and learn to accept myself as I am.

You are right about fatigue – I am exhausted most of the time – the increase in pain means a complete decrease in sleep – and I work full time so I feel I stagger from one day to the next at the moment – I was drawn to Ethan’s site for the article on crystals for sleep – like many I had amethyst under my pillow so that has now moved! I’m very grateful for his article that led me to your response about pain.

I love that labradorite is linked to lumbar region – I have a double curve so shoulder and shoulder blade on my right and lumber curve on my left. I have much more intense lumbar and hip pain as I get older which now tends to go down my outer thighs. Normally I go to my physio once a month and have done for many years – she knows my back very well and does a combination of trigger points and PAMM (power assisted micro manipulation) which has helped to give me some flexibility – but this year with covid I have only managed to get to see her twice and my back is suffering. I do have acupunture too. I find regular doctors just want to put me on ever higher pain medication and then as you know they come with side effects. I find codeine is the best I have tried so far but I cannot take too much if I have to be at work as I will be dizzy and light headed – I am trying to resist taking it too much – and as you know some days what you would normally take doesn’t reach the pain like it used to. Oh and I agree the monthly cycle increases all my pain – I find at the moment with peri menopause symptoms increasing all the time the pain in my body is much more intense.

I will look into the crystals you suggest – certainly some like fluorite and carnelian are stones I have been drawn to before – I have recently purchased a larger carnelian – I sleep with a small one under my pillow because I used to suffer with night terrors and somehow this little stone helps me. I also love Lapis … Red Jade sounds interesting as i would love more energy!

Faden Quartz and Tourmaline crystals definitely sound like something I need to try – I love your idea of a little pouch – I did buy some mixed tourmaline sticks and they are all different colours – rather small but utterly beautiful colours – I was thinking of making a necklace out of some.

Sorry for such a long reply – to be honest I don’t talk very openly about my pain as i don’t want friends to worry and I don’t want to seem like I am moaning to my colleagues. It’s quite a relief to talk about it completely openly to someone else who lives with debilitating pain so you have helped me in more ways than you know. I am going to read back through your reply and take notes and think about what I need to do. I will also look at Ethan’s advice on cleansing and programming crystals. I’m so grateful to you both.
Take good care and thank you
            Zoe

I just recently received red jasper as a gift. As I was doing more research I read that it is a useful sleep aid. However, I had one of the most intense and memorable nightmares that I have had in a while. Do you have any clue as to why this may be?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Firstly, crystals affect everyone differently, not all stones will be compatible or work well for everyone. Secondly, it might have been the crystal but it might not. There is only one way to test this and that is to see if it happens again. I’m also assuming you cleansed the crystal before use.

  100. Shakeema L Simmons

I’ve been sleeping with Amethyst for a while now and I always feel well rested in the morning. Until I accidentally slept with Amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, and clear quartz at the same time. The combination made me fall asleep quickly but also made it hard for me to wake up and I felt dizzy and sleepy until my daughter took the stones away then I was bright eyed and bushy tailed like nothing ever happened it was the strangest experience. I don’t remember if I had any dreams.

  101. Vanessa Blakney

Hi, my name is vanessa. I just started my spiritual journey! I’m living in shared room with roomies so I don’t have a lot of space to put my crystals. I just bought them last Tuesday on March 8th, and got 8 crystals. These are citrine, red Jasper, bostwana agate, nephrite, clear quartz, colored moonstone, white stone, and lastly but not least, chrysphrase. The only good place I can put is above me on my window stand. Can you explain why it’s bad to do so and how to fix that? I hope I didn’t mess anything up by placing above me. I’m new to this and didn’t know where to put because I shared my room. Btw I just woke up from having vivid dream, is that also effects from my crystals? Please let me know. Thank you 🙂

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

Hi Vanessa, I think ive explained above the many reasons why some crystals may disturb some peoples sleep above. I don’t really have a solution if you don’t have any space to store your crystals. Ultimately, it’s all about your experience and if you sleep well or not over a period of time

  102. Emma

Hi Ethan! Thank you for this great article. I am a lifelong insomniac and I’m always willing to try something to help me sleep. Several years ago I had read about amethyst being supposedly good for sleep. So I bought a set of amethyst crystals and placed them in a grid around and under my bed, looking forward to a really good nights sleep. I had the worst one of the worst nights I can ever remember! I was wide-awake, jittery and my mind was active and swirling in a very unnerving way. Never again! I look forward to trying just one or two of the crystals you have suggested above. Thank you!

    1. Cherry

@Emma, Amethyst is a high vibration crystal (Ethan, can you ping back to your article on high vibe crystals you already have please?) and, while it’s been known since antiquity to be calming, if you’re sensitive anyway it’s definitely not one you want around your bed.

The good news is, there are any number of alternatives, depending on your individual needs. I recommend you experiment with grounding/protective crystals like Black Tourmaline instead if you’d like to continue integrating crystal energy into your bedtime routine.

      1. Emma

        Hi Cherry

Thank you. I’ve been trying haematite and rose quartz and I think it may have helped a bit. I will try black tourmaline tonight. Thanks for your help!

        Emma

what would you recommend for panic attacks at night / feeling uneasy or worried and can’t stop my mind from overthinking ?

  104. Jayna

Hello! I am new to crystals and was wondering if there were any crystals to help with the pain in my throat, chest and abdomen? I was recently diagnosed with a non specific esophageal motility problem that seems to be getting worse. I have tightness in my throat and chest and pressure on my abdomen. My friends have gifted me with obsidian, hematite, smoky quartz, shungite, and prehnite. I have been wearing the obsidian bracelet and charm everyday. I would wear them when I sleep but since reading your comments I remove them before going to bed. Any help is much appreciated.

  105. Karla

    2 questions for you.

    1. My 8 yr old recently picked out a hematite. Can we place it in his room with a selenite egg shape on his bedside table?

    2. My 2 yr old was drawn to black onyx crystal and would not let it go. Can I place this in his room as well with selenite? And can I place under his crib?

    1. Ethan Lazzerini Post author

It’s up to you what you do. I personally do not recommend Selenite for sleep as it is a crown chakra crystal and has a very high vibration. Hematite and Black Onyx should be okay as they are lower chakra stones and earth element.

  106. Mari

I received an amethyst bracelet as a gift because I suffer from anxiety at night. I cleansed it and set my intentions for it. I did have two nightmares but I didnt give up and I now sleep well and most importantly….no anxiety attacks! I cleanse it everyday and wear it every night.

  107. Roxie

I slept with a big hunk of amethyst on my bedside table for a few nights and woke up feeling *drained* because my dreams were so vivid and weird. I even woke up sobbing one morning!

  108. moeed

Amethyst don’t suit me bcoz of Saturn Retrograde infront of sun and it Amethyst and black tourmaline is a big no . But Peridot help me to sleep very peacefully . if it,s cleansed and fully energized .

i will try green fluorite or howlite.

    1. Cherry

@moeed, if you were born during a Saturn Retrograde period and have your Retrograde Saturn conjunct your Sun, then you definitely need to stay clear of Amethyst.

You’ll probably find yourself in difficulty with Sapphire, too, as this gorgeous gem is also ruled by Saturn.

Howlite is lovely and soothing, and will prbbaly serve you well. If you go for Fluorite, I suggest you choose a pastel coloured one: that way its colour energy will be less intense. I have a Fluorite tumble which is about 55% deep green and 40% vivid golden yellow, the other 5% being made up of a narrow band of mauve which divides the two. Its colours are so rich, you could be forgiven for thinking it’s part Heliodor, part Emerald and a dividing band of mauve Morganite; but it is a Fluorite. I can’t keep it too close at hand at night, even though Fluorite is one of my soul crystals; it’s that powerful.

Ocean Jasper (or Sea Jasper, same crystal but less expensive) might benefit you, and while Black Tourmaline might be of no help, Pink Tourmaline – or another non-black colour like Brown or Green, and perhaps Blue, depending on your budget – still might. Larimar is also wonderfully calming stuff if you can get hold of it within your budget, and Aragonite, especially in Sputnik form, is both calming and grounding. I find Celestite deeply soothing, but not everyone does, so it would be up to you to discover whether or not you can work with it.

      Love and Light.

  109. Kim

Thank you for this article. While I find my pyramid mookaite jasper and fluorite not to be an issue on my bedside, along with my black tourmaline, I just purchases a large chunk of selenite, thinking it would also be restful. Big mistake, since I bought it, I would find myself sleeping only an hour to two hours before waking up again, repeating the cycle until the alarm went off. I had moved amethyst and labradorite out of my bedroom because they were also too potent for sleep for me in the past. Now I’m finding myself moving selenite out as well to try to get a good night’s sleep again.

  110. Cherry

@Kim, I have similar problems with Selenite. I only own one piece, a 3″ heart of which I’m very fond; but it has to stay in my spare room, because if I bring it into my bedroom, it’s bye-bye night’s sleep. I keep a piece of Mookaite under my pillow (along with a number of other kinds of crystal which people have reported being unable to sleep around), I wear a Labradorite constantly and have an Amethyst point right beside my head (it looks like the one in Ethan’s pic, only bluer and a bit more opaque) and an 8″ Amethyst tower with a Phantom a little further away, plus quite a few different pieces of Fluorite – Rainbow, Bingham Blue, Aqua and one special Rainbow one that looks like a stormy ocean, all white, purple and teal – more Labradorite, a couple of small Amethyst clusters, an Elestial Amethyst, an Amethyst egg which I’ve had since I was little, Citrine, Peridot, Topaz, Sapphire, Ruby, Ametrine, Amegreen, Heliodor, Morganite, Emerald, Aquamarine, Apatite, Goshenite, most of the different colours of Tourmaline, Celestite, Aragonite, Ocean Jasper, Red Creek Jasper, Rutilated Quartz, Phantom Lemurian Smoky Quartz, Smoky Faden Quartz, Rose Quartz and any number of Clear Quartzes including a little 1.5″ druzy. My bedside table looks like a miniature crystal shop (I haven’t even delved into some of the varieties I keep in an open tin there); and yet, unless I add in the Selenite, I sleep wonderfully well and wake feeling as refreshed as someone with my medical issues and analgesic requirements could expect to feel.

Obviously I can’t speak for you, but for myself, I know why that is: I’m very Solar, and don’t do that well with Lunar energy, which of course Selenite has in abundance. I’m pretty sure that’s the reason Selenite stops me sleeping – the unfamiliar and not altogether comfortable energy – and I’m wondering if perhaps you’re experiencing the same thing.

    Love and Light.

  111. Kevin

Gold Tigers eye has always been a good one for me along with rose quartz and black tourmaline. I’ll sometimes throw some citrine if I’ve been in a poor mood or depression or orange calcite if there’s been friction with loved ones (or to create some, if you know what I mean;) . The tigers eye helps ward off negative psychic attacks and combined with the rose quartz it also allows me to focus on that loving connection with source while I dream meanwhile the black tourmaline keeps me grounded here to the Earth plain so I don’t wake up late and all grumpy.
